Ford/GM 10-speed Automatic Transmission

Unless there are supply issues, I don't see how Ford can mis putting this 10 speed AT inside the 2017 Mustang, which will be a much higher volume than the ZL1. If they do miss it then Ford would be behind in equipping their cars with the 8-speed and 10-speed.

Handling that extra power will be a standard six-speed manual gearbox with active rev-matching and performance gearing. Chevrolet’s all-new, paddle-shifted 10-speed automatic (co-developed with Ford, in an amusing twist) is optional; the company claims it will offer incredibly fast gearshifts and close gear ratios. It’ll be GM’s first application of the new transmission and will be rolled out to numerous other products in the near future.

I personally dont like that many gears. In my experience the transmission is always shifting gears. I just want a smooth ride. When I let off the gas I dont want the car constantly down shifting or up shifting.

Then I see an electric vehicle in your future.

CVT's can't handle the torque of a pony car and having a small number of gears causes the engineers to trade power vs efficiency until a "compromise" is met. A larger number of gears, assuming that it's smooth shifting, allows you to compromise less. Sounds like a win if the cost makes sense and it's reliable.

It depends on the programming. The ubiquitous ZF8HP 8-speed handles scenarios very well.

I assume there are supply issues launching a brand new transmission. Ford said the 10 speed launches on the F-150 Raptor first, GM launches it on a limited run Camaro. I would assume based on that the first year volumes for the transmission are small.

Because the 2017 isn't the face lift. We'll probably see that in 2018.

It makes sense to debut a more dramatic, whole meal deal package for the 2018 MY.

Most modern automatic will shift similar to DCT when the torque converter is locked up. Each the gear position has its own clutch in an automatic transmission.

It is, that post is incorrect.

GM and Ford did work together on a 6 speed auto for FWD/transaxle cars back in the early 2000's.

The current A6 transmission is a version of the very first ZF 6 speed from like..2003.

That auto is an engineering win.
Someone needs to check w vette guys and fibd out max totque before it breaks.
Drove one and was very impressed.
