Okay I've been following as much as I can the issues some people have had regarding excessive oil consumption and in extreme cases blown engines.
My concern is that certain oils may be more susceptible to misting in the crankcase. In that event it could be that certain oils are prone to bathing the PCV and catch cans with more vapors than they can handle leading to oil consumption and other associated issues.
My intent for this tread is to open a line of discussion in the event there is actually some merit to the idea. I am fully aware there may not be any merit to it but without asking the question, documenting the responses and looking at the data it will not be something that can be used to help determine the cause of the issue.
The questions I have to ask are;
1. What brand, weight, type of oil are you using?
2. How often do you change the oil?
3. Are you using a catch can and if so which one?
4. If using a catch can how often do you empty it out?
5. How much accumulation do you have when you empty it?
6. If you're willing/capable of checking, how clean/oily is your throttle body? @ how many miles?
If this is true a pattern should be identifiable if enough thoughtfully presented, consistent data can be gathered.
This is not a brand "x" vs "y" thread. I don't care about brand names, reputations, or opinions. Lets get some real world data flowing from the real world experiences of the forum users.
One important note. If there are actually any results to be found here the more specific and accurate your data is the better. It could also be that it's not an oil issue at all but again reviewing the data will lead to that conclusion if that is the case.
I realize this is a way out there idea but it would not be the first time certain engines and certain oils didn't play well together.
Just to clarify the intent of this thread again.
If you guys/gals would be willing to compile and share the information asked for I will collect the data and put up a spreadsheet to see if there is a pattern to found in there somewhere.
Regardless of the end result it would be good to be able to acknowledge there is an issue or rule it out.
