Final Sixth-Generation Ford Mustang Rolls Off The Assembly Line
James Elkins

mbly-line-2023-04-06_09-31-34_291773-1440x960-jpeg.jpg

When the S650 Mustang was released in September 2022, we all knew the end of the line was near for the sixth-generation Mustang that originally began in 2015. Although it was not the first Mustang with a Coyote engine, as that was featured in the previous S197, it was the first to combine the powerful powerplant with an independent rear suspension in a modern chassis.

The final S550 out of the Flat Rock Assembly Plant is an Oxford White beauty that sports a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine.

From an enthusiast standpoint the S550 provided a balance between power, handling, and modern amenities. On the business side, the S550 became the first Mustang to become a global car and in turn would reign as the world’s best selling sports car for seven straight years.

In addition to having an EcoBoost and GT model, the S550 platform also provided the bones for the modern GT350, GT500, Mach 1, and more. In 2018, the Mustang would continue to push technology with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissionthat provided lightning fast shifts and began to break records in the quarter-mile. However, with time comes change, and a new Mustang is ready to take its place on the throne of Ford Motor Company.

The final S550 Mustang to roll off of the line at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant is an Oxford White beauty that pays homage to the previous generations that sported a Wimbledon White scheme. Under the hood is a 2.3-liter 310 horsepower with 350 lb-ft of torque turbocharged EcoBoost engine.

While it’s easy to bemoan the end of the road for the S550, it’s important to remind yourself of the road it traveled and brought with it along the way. That technology and improvements have now been utilized in the upcoming S650 chassis that pairs even more technology with performance to continue the Mustang lineage even further.

Wow, got to admit I'm a little melancholy over this. I remember when Ford had an event at the Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica when they revealed the 2015 S550 Mustang. My brother works there and he told me about it. I saw a Race Red Mustang GT with PP1.

One door closes and another opens. I'm ordering a 2024 GT and this may be the last true edition.

The 15-17 Mustang will never fade away. In fact, it's starting to become one of the most sought after Mustangs of all time !

The S550 will be the next foxbody mustang. The platform is very tunable and modifiable. When most rides become electric and more efficient people will look for this platform as a way to get an ICE engine to tinker around and reminisce about. Maybe not in the next 10 years but 25-50 from now. I was born in 1997 and am sad with the transition to all electric. I grew up in the tail end of ICE vehicles and was not financially well off enough to purchase my desired sports cars until now. I am grateful for being able to own and drive this platform. Most people see cars as machines and yes, at the end of the day they are machines. But for a lot of us they are more than that. We've made friends, memories, and even raised a little hell for our passion of ICE motors. Im sure this will continue with electric vehicles and I'll be labeled an "idiot or Fool" for attaching so much sentimental value to a machine just because of it's powertrain. However I live by a saying, "enjoy the little things in life because one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things". Never again my friends will we be able to purchase a part and tinker with a motor like we do at this moment. Enjoy the cussing, the 4 hour afternoon projects, and the annoying high school kid with his plastidipped rims and badges cruising down the road. Because one day you won't have that memory to build with a friend or family member when your all electric Tesla, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, etc updates and gains it's 10hp boost from the cloud. Maybe we'll be able to tinker with the suspension at least! Maybe.....

It too shall live in peoples' garages and memories. It can now join the company of the Sierra Cosworth, Mondeo, SN95 Mystic Cobra and so many others. Amen.

I loved my 2015 GT and i'm lucky to have picked up a 2020 GT .. I'm keeping the 2020 GT , hell it only has 8000 miles on it and it's fully tunable ..

There has been a “last” model year for every generation of Mustang built…. The last S550 won’t be any more important than the last S197, the last SN95, the last Fox or any last Mustang from the Classic Era.

I’m not saying that out of ignorance… or to offend… it’s just facts and true. It’s not going to be worth any significant value 50 years from today - and that was my reason for the “Pfffffft” in my initial response in this thread. 🤪

The other thing is, Ford did a last S550 using an EB and not a V8…. So it will have that stigmatism from the V8ters… but maybe it was sentimental on Ford’s behalf because the real Mustang that started it all was never a V8, it started as a 2-seater 4-Cyl vehicle… and it too was white.

i respect it’s place in line, V8 or not. What a fantastic generation of Mustang, one of my favorites. Thanks to all who worked on the s550 project from engineering, assembly, and design (Okay not the pencil pushers for being so cheap on things I thought should have been better). It’s bittersweet and I wish I was as excited about the next “generation “ but I’m not. I’ll enjoy my Mach 1 as long as I can, maybe get a first gen to restore, and continue to pepper my garage with Mustang stuff. Godspeed White EcoBoost, you have a fantastic legacy in your rear view mirror.

The HiPo 2.3 was cool - reminds me of the SVO
I love mine.
The last s550, meh. no one will care now or later .
IF during the run of the s650 car the last ice only model last one rolls off, THAT will be the one to have.
Sadly I see the s650 coupe being a short run, m/y car. high rates and a tanking economy it might not make it out the other side, as it doesn't have 15 other Ford/merc/linc car models based off the same platform like say the mustangII and Foxbody did.
