It seems like a lot of people don’t understand tire and rim relationships.

More often than not, I see people recommending getting wider tires when someone ask for fitment and/or grip recommendations.

Getting just wider tires while not changing the rim’s width won’t do much

for example, I saw a guy that had 325 tires on a stock 9.5 inch PP rim.

The contact patch will pretty much be the same if you get wider tires and leave the rims alone.

Yep plus you run into safety issue, tire could pop out in sharp turn in addition the car gets really floaty when side wall bulges out like that.

The contact patch will pretty much stay the same regardless. Only the shape changes. It's based on mass and tire pressure. If you go wider, you need to decrease pressure to widen the contact patch.

You can sum a lot of things up with; "People are stupid." It applies in many situations.

Hmmm 10.5” with a max of 295. Guess the ford engineers didn’t get the memo or threw it out for the PP2 or Mach1.

From what I've read, tread width is the key metric, ideally tyres that are 1/2 an inch under the rim width, provides for the best handling option with up to 1/2 an inch over rim width being acceptable.

Ford was going for style points and bragging in literature. That said 305 does fit and survives heavy track use.

In all matters of engineering except bridge building there are fudge factors.

Plus a 295 tire isn't remotely 295 across. That is why tirerack measures every damn tire using a consistent methodology.

50% are stupid and the other 50% don't know it .
The 50% that don't know it are the REALLY dangerous ones. Seems like a lot of them go into politics.

Tires are also allowed up to a 10% difference in actual size compared to indicated size. Some manufacturers are more true to size than others.

Ford designs the car to meet a whole host of requirements, not solely performance. More sidewall = more comfortable ride. Because most people buying mustangs will only drive them to and from work.
