If I follow these instructions, the next time I change my oil, I will not be putting a little fresh oil on the o-ring for the 1st time in my life. I am not sure I am capable of this?
Any ideas why they would recommend not lubricating the o-ring?
That is a mystery. I can't see where there is a negative impact. Maybe FORD uses different elastomer that does not like oil on the face.

The other possibility since Ford may be anal about this is, smearing the gasket with oil changes the relationship between torque and preload.

Looking at a fastener torqued to a specified value will produce a specific preload.

If you take the same fastener, apply a lubricant, and apply the same torque, the preload will be higher. Different lubricants would yield different results.

While the filter gasket is not a fastener, in this application it behalves like one depending how much the filter housing gets preloaded for a specific torque.

Don't try to over think the simple things.
A drop of oil spread out onto the filter gasket will never hurt.
The worst thing that will happen is it will be easy to remove next time.

Oil on the gasket will slide better so it won't bunch up when tightening.
Kinda weird that Ford does not specify a torque spec for the oil filter.
I am doing my first oil change soon. Car has 2600 miles in 8 months and my oil usage meter is at 34%. Engine does not burn oil at all and I do drive her hard too.

Seriously? The thread titled drain plug torque specs doesn't ever mention the torque specs?!?

The shots out of the service manual with the torque specs were originally posted in post #1, but they are now missing.

I can understand some moderator freaking out over a scan of a copyrighted page from some manual and deleting them but its kind of dickish to not replace them with the numbers since that was the reason the pages was posted. Believe me the torque specs themselves are not copyrighted.

The pictures are hosted on Imgur which is blocking this forum for some reason. It's nothing an admin did.

Since they are pictures and could disappear at any time, here is the text version of what's in those pictures now.

V8, or V6 oil filter: Do NOT lubricate the o-ring or gasket. 44 lb-in, followed by another 180 degrees.

I4 oil filter: Lubricate the gasket with clean oil. 71 lb-in, followed by another 180 degrees.

V8 drain plug: 19 lb-ft

V6 or I4 drain plug: 20 lb-ft

Note for owners replacing their drain plug with a drain valve: use the lessor of the torque specified for the valve and the torque for the drain plug it replaces. Valves usually have lower torque specs than the plugs.

Update: since several members have been asking in different threads about drain plug threads of the Ecoboost and V6, all 3 engines have M12x1.75 drain plugs. Part number: 9L8Z6730A.

Might be good if a moderator could paste these values into the original post, to save members reading thru 20+ posts to get the values.

For those who are not used to not putting oil on the seal, there is no need on the GT because there is always some oil still dripping out of the oil cooler so it self-lubricates. I mean unless you wait hours for it to completely drain, there is gonna be some oil.
So the factory filter is really small comparing to the MC filter.
I also used a large sandwich bag to cover the filter while loosening it, all the spilled oil goes in the bag keeps everything clean.
There is no need to fill filter too, it takes less than a second for the oil pressure to come up after filling. You engine is never "dry" unless you flush it with gasoline.
Changed my oil at 3000 mile since new. I see no metal shaving and I don't burn oil at all.
I just drive gently for the first 1000 miles no full throttle, and then occasional full throttle and engine brake after 1000 miles.
On the other hand, I was resetting the computer by unplugging the battery. When I plug it back in, the headlights turned on for a split second so there was a huge current while the terminal is not fully seated making some huge sparks.

What are the torque specs for the oil filter and drain plug for the 5.0L? The images uploaded are now blank :(
19 ft-lbs on the drain plug. I don't torque the filter with a torque wrench, but turn it 3/4 turn after the gasket first hits the mount seat.
