For those of you who care and purchased a torque wrench, read on (this is form the 2016 service manual)

V8:

V6:

Ecoboost:

I've learned some decent info from lurking these forums, figured I'd make a contribution of my own. If I do end up purchasing the mustang I ordered I may contribute more, but for now this is all I will provide.

Happy holidays y'all.

So basically hand tight and then half turn.

With oil filters, I like to make the filter's gasket just hit the seat, then go 2/3 turn more. Never had one leak, and it still comes off at the end of the run fairly easy.

It says to not oil the gasket. I was taught to always put some oil on it.

It says to lube the filter gasket for the Ecoboost, but not for the V8 or V6 ... strange. I always put a film of clean oil on the gasket.

ALWAYS full up at least half of the filter with new oil before you install it and ALWAYS lube up the o-ring.

If I follow these instructions, the next time I change my oil, I will not be putting a little fresh oil on the o-ring for the 1st time in my life. I am not sure I am capable of this?
Any ideas why they would recommend not lubricating the o-ring?

If you look at the service manual instructions in post #1, it says to only lube the oil filter on the 2.3L Ecoboost, but to not lube the filter gasket on the V8 or V6.

The V8 and V6 take the same oil filter: FL-500S
The 2.3 Ecoboost takes oil filter: FL-910S

Both oil filters have a basic nitrile rubber gasket, so not sure why Ford says to not lube the FL-500S. I will be putting a thin coating of new oil on the filter when I change the oil, regardless of what the manual says.

It shows on the box of the FL500S to lube the ring!

Yeah see what happens if you don't lube the gasket. It'll be a pain to remove also. Plus it stresses the gasket during install.

Maybe people are consistently over-torqueing them.

This.

I've never heard of not lubing the filter gasket. That's asking for trouble, IMO.
