Indeed. When I had my BMWs I used a BimmerTech proprietary cable with their software on my laptop to access the cars' electronics. They had a big warning to not power the laptop with an inverter running off the car while using the cable, as there had been some nasty grounding issues that had fried assorted bits of the setup in some cases.
