You really want to try and educate me on the laws of my own county/state? Funny thing is, I actually worked for Envirotest, the company that administered the emissions tests in the five counties you listed, so I know the laws.

Tennessee Code Annotated, 55-9-202 states:

Mufflers Muffler cutouts prohibited Penalty.

(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on any road, street or highway unless the motor vehicle is equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke.

(b) It is unlawful to use a “muffler cutout” on any motor vehicle upon any road, street or highway.

(c) A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor.

[Acts 1931, ch. 82, § 14; C. Supp. 1950, § 2700.15 (Williams, § 2694); T.C.A. (orig. ed.), § 59-902; Acts 1989, ch. 591, § 113.]

If it's the law in TN, I can almost guarantee you an even stricter law is on the books in CA; the most heavily regulated state in the country.

It's people like you, who go around offering advice to people when you are ignorant of the law, that need to be avoided.
BS law. I remember that the Dodge SRT-4 didnt come with mufflers from the factory, so are you saying those cars werent allowed to be sold in your state? Maybe they are talking about cutouts aka "muffler cutout"?

Well guys it was a simple thought. I tried it and it sounds really good. For those of you that say it sounds like crap I would recomend you hear a s550 with no muffler before you start shitting on the sound. I did say that it had some minor drone on the highway in a very small window of RPM's anything above 1900 you wont hear any drone I'm not sure what highways you guys drive on but me keeping up with traffic I stay above 1900 in 6th gear. However, I am glad those that had input said something, as we all like differnt things and build our cars accordingly. I don't plan on keeping my car with this cheap setup, I just wanted something while I save funds for putting some FI on the car which will require me to put a bigger exhaust on.

Just because you think the law is stupid, or B.S., does not make it any less legal. I quoted you the law in TN. You can always choose to ignore the law, but don't complain if/when your faced with the consequences of doing so.

As for the SRT4 you speak of, those cars were issued a Exemption Order that covers their exhaust configuration.

Sound is subjective. I think paying over $1000 for sound gives you the psychological effect of it sounding better. lol I think the mufflers on this car are fine, its the resonator that ruins it, but that's just my opinion.

I took my GTPP to my local exhaust guy to have him put the Roush mufflers from my 13 on. He said it would be a lot of work and expense for him to cut the mufflers up and hang them again, so he suggested a muffler delete as he had done on several camaros and challengers. I decided to give it a try, but after having driven with it for a couple of months, the drone is just annoying and almost unbearable at times. The sound really is pretty nice especially at high RPM, but I will most likely go back and have him put an H-pipe and the Roush mufflers in sometime soon.

I have a Boss H and Muffler delete on the 12. Love it. The h pipe really helped the sound out.

I did it bc I wasn't sure what exhaust to get. Ended up keeping it and love it.

I'm pretty sure what the TN law is referring to is the sort of remotely actuated dump valve to bypass everything -- in fact, you may still be able to have the system installed, but it may only be legal to use off-road. The law is never what it says it is, and not what a cop tells you it is -- it's what you can convince the judge it is... if you want that hassle...

Flowmaster Outlaw axelbacks with stock resonator is glorious. An H or X will increase overall volume. The axelback fixes the silent normal driving. Replacing the resonator is so you can be heard three miles away. Replacing the mufflers let's you bask in the glory of the 5.0

Like I said, its subjective lol. There is no right or wrong, everyone's opinion will differ. I just bought roush mufflers and a FRPP X-pipe myself. Half the price of most catbacks and equivalent sound quality.

I'm wanting to buy flowmaters outlaws axle backs for a louder sound. I have the MBRP street cat back now. It's nice and I like it. I just want something louder. Do you think the outlaws axle backs would be louder than the street cat back that I have? I need it to be louder but not crazy if that makes sense. How's the drone? I do lots of highway driving.

Muffler Deletes???

Anybody gotten rid of the mufflers yet? This has to be the most disappointing v8 mustang sound from the factory ever made. I see several muffler delete kits that sound really good and keep the cats. Would you still be able to pass an inspection in the midwest? Also I wonder if it would be much cheaper to just have a local muffler shop bend some pipe and weld some tips on after they cut the mufflers off?

There's a thread on this topic on the exhaust section of the forum
