Ok, i have a 2015 mustang gt with perf package, 6 speed manual. when i bought it, i wanted a cobra, but they stopped making them until now the 2016 comes out. was probably going to trade mine back in, but cant seem to touch one for less than 20K over sticker, even from the dealer i bought 6 cars from in the last year!
why do i want the cobra? its the top of the line mustang. always wanted the best one out there. loved the idea of the 2014 with supercharger and 661 HP, but after having mine, dont want to go back to that body style, as i recently found one for sale at my dealer.
so as i sit thinking about the gt350 cobra, i go back to just keeping mine and adding a supercharger to it.
i was thinking just go with the ford/roush unit, but when i was directed to a speed shop from my own dealer(one of the sales mgrs) he sent me to loper's in phoenix, az. he instantly said he puts on a whipple, and is so much better than the ford racing one. costs a little bit more, about 1500-2000 more.
so, which is better? since this is a whipple forum, im sure most or all will say whipple.
I love the power in my car, but love the idea of a supercharger under the hood. dont plan on tracking it or anything, goes to work, and wherever i want to go and play with it here and there.
do i need to buy anything else or worry about anything breaking with a kit? can the car handle it as it? i would hate to blow a motor because of it or something like that.
can you really feel so much difference? i love the idea of the whine, how loud is it? what if you drive it normal, is that possible any longer? how about fuel mileage, does that go down a lot now? is there a boost gauge anyplace that can be put in? i have the vacuum gauge from the PP, will that do nothing now or what does it do in boost mode?
what is the warranty if any? i have a ford esp warranty, 7/100K, is it still good or not at all? i guess my strut tower bar serves no use after this as it wont fit?
i also live in AZ, its hot here!!!! what will this do to the engine with the SC on it, how will temps be??
can anyone recommend anyplace else for install?
are there different stages or kits for this? or just one for this car? i would rather be safe than sorry from too much boost later down the line.
i hope you can help answers some of these, loved reading the posts.
anything else you can add would be great.
thank you
Very good questions. Let me try and add some answers to the already great answers that were provided.
GT vs GT350
I also wanted a top of the line mustang. I thought long and hard about waiting for a special edition but a few problems for me.
1. I am an instant gratification kinda guy and I just could not get myself to wait lol
2. I knew without a doubt that I would want to modify my car and I just could not get myself ok with modifying a special edition car.
3. Insurance, gas guzzler tax such things. I have a 800+ hp car (once I get headers installed) and I am not being penalized for it by insurance. I have plans to get a rider added to cover the expense of installed parts incase of total loss/theft.
Let me just state here that the Roush/FFRP kit is a really nice kit but imho it really doesn't measure up to the Whipple with its front inlet, dual fan massive heat exchanger, massive TB, far superior intercooler, tune and over all fit & finnish. Please note this is my honest opinion and not meant to offend anyone. Might wanna check your numbers because when you compare apples to apples with the pricing between the 2 kits it really isn't a big price difference.
As stated you might want to consider getting the oil pump and cam gears changed but as far as the engine goes that should be all that needs to be done. As far as non engine parts I would recommend 1/2 shafts for sure and probably a better clutch at some point but doesn't "have" to be done. I also changed to MGW shifter and one piece driveshaft but again these do not have to be done. Wheel hop is something to be addressed but does not have to be done. Technically the Whipple out of the box is all you need and everything else depends on your comfortability and wants for your car.
Drivability with the Whipple tune is spot on. The car runs and drives as beautiful as factory. You most certainly can have stock drivability when not using boost. Fuel mileage will be slightly less due to tune and larger injectors but honestly it's not noticeable to me. Keeping your foot out of the gas is the biggest factor with fuel mileage lol. Yes you can REALLY feel the difference (when in boost). The car is just amazing to drive. The wine is not loud per say. It is such a joy to listen to and you will most definitely enjoy it lol. The factory vacuum gauge acts as normal until the boost comes on then the gauge drops to zero while in boost. I am still waiting for a good option for a boost gauge. I do not like the idea of putting one in the vent and am currently waiting for my ordered ecoboost PP vacuum gauge to swap in to see if it will work. I will keep you all posted on this.
The Whipple kit is a one and done kinda kit. No different stage but you can then build from there with say a custom tune, smaller pulley and long tube headers.
Hope this helps and feel free to hit us back up with more questions.
