Is it just for timer or will you also be recording?

I have the MMR gopro/smartphone mount but it attaches to the seatback so it's more for recording video.

Get a mount with a really good cup. That's the important mount. The RAM Mount cups are really good.

Here's my setup - cheap and effective;

-RAM RAP-B-369AU Mirror Base
-RAM RAP-B-201U-A RAM Composite Short Double Socket Arm for 1" Ball Bases
-RAM-HOL-UN7BU-T RAM MOUNTS X-Grip with TETHER for Cell Phone Holder 1" Ball

Some other advice;

-the X-Grip unit I used has these compatibility dimensions, make sure to measure your phone with case to make sure it fits (and there are other larger versions all the way up to tablet-size): Cradle Dimensions
Minimum Width = 1.875" (Minimum Height = 4.25")
Maximum Width = 3.25" (Minimum Height = 2.25")
Depth = 0.875"

-The one piece you need that the kit will not come with, is an extra mirror-mount set screw (the mirror mount uses one to attach to the stock windshield button, then the stock rearview mirror needs one to attach to the RAM mirror mount - like a sandwich). I happened to have one in my shop that worked, but you may need to make a hardware store run.

-To obstruct less windshield area, you should do the spin trick on the rearview mirror - just grab it and rotate it 180 degrees. It is mounted off-center toward the top in stock form, so this moves it up a couple inches, giving you more effective room below to position your phone on the X-Grip / arm. The unit can also be moved on its' double socket arm to barely hang below the mirror, so not block much windshield.

That's a nice setup.

I tried once to center my mount below the mirror but it interfered with my dash cam. I now mount mine on the passenger side.

I use the Ram Mount windshield mount with the short arm and x-grip phone mount.
