Basically, the higher the number, the quicker the acceleration. So a car with a 3.55 final drive ratio will get off the line quicker than a car with the standard... 3.18, I think it is?
The flip side of that is that they consumer more gasoline, since you need to be running the engine at a higher RPM to achieve the same speed. So they're not great for highway driving.
