As mentioned previously, condensation mixed with oil in the breather can create what you've described. It could also be two other things:Looks milky, it wasnt full, pretty much light brown
1) the oil additive Cera Tec
2) an internal engine problem
The BBQ tick is a characteristic sound of these engines.
At idle, listening down by and behind the front wheels, someone with the tick will hear a random, light ticking sound, like a BBQ grill igniter attempting to fire.
Having the tick presents ZERO problems. It's normal. People do not like it though and add Cera Tec to the oil. This oil additive stops the tick.
Cera Tec will turn the oil a milkshake color.

Check the dipstick. If it looks like "regular" oil, that's a sign it's condensation in the can with the oil. If it looks like milkshake, that could be Cera Tec. It could also be an internal issue. Along with the oil level and appearance, monitor the coolant level in the burp tank attached to the radiator.
The bubbling in the catch can and now the engine dying, I can't speak to that. You're in the investigative phase right now. If you have an On-Board Diagnostic scan tool, attach that and see what's there, what codes might be stored. You're probably tuned. Do you have a tuning device? If so, how is that reporting?
