TC's were never an issue with the VQ's, they were an issue on the early (90 - 92) Q45's as they has Bakelite chain guides & needed to be replaced before 100K miles.

Only issue with the VQ's is the crank & cam position sensors which seem to go around 100K miles. They are cheap & easy to replace.
I owned an Altima SER for 8 years and have been a member of VQ forums for just as long. VQs are known for timing chain guide and tensioner issuers which cause chatter and also for suddenly losing oil pressure.

Otherwise, even if you cant get all the paperwork, the answer is mid 90's honda civic with a manual. Preferably a DX.

Well I test drove the 08 Ford Focus with 160k miles. Everything seemed pretty good until the test drive. The engine was vibrating like a mother through the pedal and steering wheel. The trans felt fine but there has to be a problem with it. The dealer offered it at a $500 discount as I left putting it at $3k which is really cheap for an 08

The search is still on. I might get a Honda just so I can put some fart cans on it

Just as an update to those who commented I ended up with a 2005 Toyota Corolla with 160k miles for $3300. The car is in great condition overall. The only concern was rust since the previous owner had lived in Massachusetts but it didn't look too bad underneath

I'm just giving it a little love now. New panel filter just went in and I also sprayed off the MAF Sensor. Iridium spark plugs and an oil change next
