The Luftwaffe had a Flying Training Center at Holloman AFB, New Mexico from 1993 to 2019.

The last operational Phantoms in the USAF were flown by German pilots, 1993 to 2004.

Europe’s airspace is crowded, and the Southeast USA has much better weather, so the Luftwaffe leased facilities at Fort Bliss and Holloman AFB.

Initially their training was with German-spec F-4F Phantoms. At some point the F-4Fs went back to Germany,
and their Flying Training Center leased F-4Es from the US Air Force. They weren’t identical, but close enough for good training.

These F-4E fighters had a USAF paint job, but with the colors of the German flag painted in stripes on the tail. They flew them until Dec. 2004, when the Luftwaffe stopped training new Phantom pilots.

The Luftwaffe at Holloman AFB continued training operations for their Tornado bombers until 2019.

I might never have known, if I wasn’t stationed there.

When the Luftwaffe pulled out of New Mexico in 2019, the put one of their Tornados on display at the Alamogordo Air & Space Museum. It has a New Mexico sun symbol (zia) and the silhouette of a roadrunner on the tail.

When I was in grade school, a day on Mercury was forever. But we learned different in the 60s IIRC.
