Cruising at 35 mph

TC & steering light came on.

Message center displayed "Steering Assist Fault" and "see dealership for service"

Tach went to 0 (engine cut off)

Interior door locks won't respond, Interior trunk button won't respond.

Fob lock/unlock has no response. 2x trunk button will make lights flash, but trunk stays latched (this is the most response I can get from anything)

I've disconnected the battery and waited. Situation remains the same.

I'm very glad I wasn't on the highway. Had to push into a parking lot. I can't even lock the passenger door.

Has anyone had anything like this happen? I've disconnected the battery for the night. Tomorrow I'll try to start it again, but I'm not holding my breath.

Not saying this is the problem but when my battery had a bad cell (low voltage)it did all kind of funky shit.

Yeah, when the battery in my '16 went bad, it was all kinds of crazy, like in some sort of limp mode, would barely accelerate - then all sorts of traction/ABS error messages, just totally flipped the f*** out.

Another vote for battery issue. I've had the same crazy stuff happen when the battery started to go bad. The thing to remember is things that have low current draw might still work like the lights that still flash. If a cell has shorted you lose the ability to deliver higher current flow. If you don't see ~13.2 volts DC you probably have a bad battery. The meter only needs a trickle of current to work. Auto parts stores will run a free stress test for you if in doubt. Good luck!

Side note if it is the battery: I went through Batteries Plus, not sure if you have those in your area. It's easy to find a 15% coupon for a Duracell that's an exact fit/spec for the S550, order online, pickup from the store, take in the old battery and walk out with your core charge already credited.

I'm about to head out with the pickup and pull the battery. If that's the issue it seems easier than trying to set up my laptop and OBD2 scanner in a parking lot.

Update:

I went ahead and changed the battery out since it's over 3 years old. No change.

As I was locking everything up to go form a new plan, I manually locked the passenger door, shut it and tried the handle. Since I have the key in my pocket the doors unlocked!! I tried the engine and it started, and got home.

Puzzling.

There is a DTC stored and the wrench is lit up. I'm going to check that now.

For some reason the clutch starter switch right below the clutch pedal can go bad. It Somehow is in line with your car starting and/or cutting off if bad. It’s not an exp naive item from the dealer either. Just something else to check after a battery replacement.

This makes it seem like either the battery was the culprit and it just took a little while for everything to start working again with the new one... Or I have a bad connection/short in a harness somewhere that jarred loose when I shut that door. I'm going to assume the first unless things start happening more often.

Did you tune the car before you had issues?
