Exactly! It's all about having options. I wouldn't be changing wheels on a busy carriageway either. But if you can get to a place of safety, why not.

It's a bit like Kapiteins go faster bits. Probably cost a few thousand, not much use if you're parked up at the side of the road though.
Where as spend a few hundred, just the once, and it gives you the option to go somewhere. There's some roads up here where you might be lucky to see another car in 5 hrs, let alone 5 mins. Would I rather have a go faster bit or a spare wheel. Hmmmmm. No offence meant Kapitein.

It's just occurred to me I've never seen one, I know there's a compressor but I don't recall any gunk...

The can of gunk should be attached to the compressor. It is selectable, either gunk and air or just air.

The gunk has a shelf life though.

Not quite true. I did fill the punctured tyre with gunk, which allowed me to drive the 20 miles to Ford who robbed me of £210 for a new tyre. Ford were reluctant to do the repair after it has been filled. Still have the tyre though.

Note that I didnt use the ford kit in the boot. I got one of those cans from Halfords that did the job quite well. I saved the gunk in the boot. I also note that the inflator thing was pants, couldnt hold the pressure so wouldn't inflate the tyre after gunk!

The Automotive Authority solution is now shipping - a correctly sized wheel which will fit over the larger brakes AND also in the spare wheel well has been a long time coming. It has the same rolling diameter as the GT rears so will not strain the limited slip diff when in use on the rear. Details and video at:

Mine arrived today and it fits in the boot beautifully. I'll do a test fit on the car in the next day or two when the temperature increases by a few degrees.

Its not cheap with UK shipping, tax and duty and may not be for everyone, but for me the thought of touring in Europe and suffering an unsealable puncture on an Alpine pass requiring recovery and VOR while sourcing a new tire makes it worthwhile.

Nick, best to go through their ordering process up to the payment method to get an accurate quote as the prices have changed. I placed my order back in May of this year before the product was even available and received a pre-order discount at that time. Automotive Authority seem very 'active' with their discount codes so I'd suggest registering on their site to get a current one. Shipping to the UK has gone up too. Then there is customs duty, VAT and ParcelForce's clearance fee too. Depending on the prevailing exchange exchange rate you are going to be looking at £400, or so, delivered.

I did consider buying and carrying a spare stock Mustang GT wheel and tyre but that does not fit neatly into the spare wheel-well. As I am hoping never to have to get this thing out, I did not want to lose any boot space from my convertible on a permanent basis.

Well I bit the bullet and received my wheel today - just 18 days after ordering. Total cost after import and handling charges - even with discount - £569.28. Expensive for a spare wheel, but perhaps not for peace of mind?

Just bought one from Nemesis (on sale at 10% off until Sunday), bought it Wednesday evening and delivered Friday by DPD (hence not just rolled under a bush as you get with some couriers). Wheel looks very good quality, just waiting for the car to put it in now !
