According to the UK owners guide, it uses a 25W D8S bulb and has 2,000 lumens rather than the 3,000 for most HID bulbs - according to http://www.carlightblog.com/2012/02/14/xenon-for-everyone/
That site says: "An automatic headlight range control system and a headlamp washer system are compulsory from 2000 lumens upwards"
so maybe it is just a cheaper option... The US version uses D3S which I presume are the "full strength" 35W / 3K lumens with no washers fitted.
I'll be interested to see what this means to us for night driving. There also seems to be no switch to move the beams for continental driving - could make a night time autobahn journey a little interesting!
