Hi guys,

Are there are any tuners that specialize in road course/autocross driving i.e. non-drag specific applications? I have a 6R80 auto transmission, which I know isn't as good as the manual would be for what I want.

However, I'd like to see who tunes for this kind of thing. Let me preface this by saying I have a Lund flex fuel tune with 18 manifold and 47lb injectors - stock headers and cats. I always drive the car in Sport (manual) mode, so I don't care for the regular D mode at all. I like to rev the engine up and select my own gears. In fact I hate the D mode because it is so bad IMO. It literally neuters the car and shifts way too early.

*I have noticed something on my car which is annoying me. After a hard or moderate pull, the engine will go into coast after I let off the throttle, say at 4-5,000 RPM when I do not want it to. I am expecting engine braking/fuel cutoff and instead the car keeps carrying momentum. This can be disconcerting approaching a corner on the street and expecting deceleration and not getting it. It actually feels like it is pulling me forward. I don't want this happening on autocross or road course event. It seems like some sort of cat protection logic in the ECU perhaps? Where it wants to continue dumping fuel to cool the cats down? That's just a wild guess. And it happens even after short bursts where I feel like I am not even pushing it that hard that this should happen. At any other time at that RPM, the engine will go into engine braking/fuel cutoff as I think it is supposed to. So why does it always happen sometimes? I know that in very low rpms the car is programmed to coast sometimes, but I don't think it should be happening in gear at 4,000/5,000 rpm

I have emailed Lund about this and I understand their tunes to be more drag-specific or drag oriented, which is totally fine. Just wondering if I should consider a different tuner and who to go to. It also wouldn't hurt to have a more linear throttle feel and more controlled downshifts/upshifts. Any advice for me as to what you think is happening and if I can do anything about it?

I was very upfront about my usage profile with Shaun when I got his tune. He tailored it to DD and autocross/track use.

Yep. And I should have been with Lund. They basically told me as such, that if this was my application not to even bother. A little disappointing but honesty nonetheless which I appreciate.

Pretty sure though that Shaun won't even tune my car without a stock datalog. I'm not taking the manifold off and going back to stock airbox, etc. So that being said I might be SOL but that's why I'm seeking opinions.

Not true. My initial log to him was on my prior tune.
Oh. Don't know where I heard that then. I am going to email Shaun and see what he says. Thanks for that.

It seems that the tuners don't/won't modify Sport mode in the automatic transmissions.

I think what is throwing me off - why does it do one thing normally and then randomly do something else? Like how come it can go into fuel cutoff/engine braking most of the time and another time decide to coast/dump fuel?

Since everything is ECU controlled - the ECU must be doing this for a reason. I'd like to know what that is.

Cat protection is the usual reason. Also depends on rpm. Below 2500 rpm it'll often fuel to protect for change of mind/stall protection.

Have you seen this with your MT-82?

Yes. I saw it stock, and with either tuner as well.
Oh, great. Thanks. I assume it would not be a smart thing to turn this off. It must be there for a good reason.

I can recomend Shaun too. I went to him with a request for a road tune on our UK fuel. We don’t drag race over here and we have lots of narrow twisty roads so I asked for something really drivable and above all safe as I didn’t want to over stress anything. The resulting tune was night and day different from stock with loads more mid range power. The guy is very good
