Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum and looked thru different threads to see what is out there on this topic and didnt find mich. if there is a thread someone is aware of, could you post it as a reply please?

I purchase a 2016 GT Convertible w/ auto trans in Nov '16, within the first month I started hearing a 'clank' when shifting from P to R and also going back and forth between R and D. I hear on flat and incline roads as well as in my garage or around town. Sounds like it is coming from the tranny.

I've take it to two dealers and get the its hormal and nothings is wrong answers. I found on a different forum some guys talking about theie dealers replacing front and rear flanges but results are inconsistent at best. Some mentioned something about valve in the overall drivetrain too. I can't find that thread again and not sure what it referred to anyway.

Anyone out there experiencing this or have a buddy that has? Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Mine is doing this now, best I can tell is that its the trans yoke having slack on the output shaft. No bad u-joints or carrier bearing either. I found it with the car up on a 4 post lift with someone putting the car in D and R going back n fourth. Have not had the time to find a fix yet. It has been passed on to me that this is an issue that has plagued others some with no avail.

I have the same noise, I've had it for close to a year. It is so annoying and 3 dealers have told me it is normal. But normal does not equal okay! There must be some design flaw that Ford just doesn't or hasn't fixed yet. Ive heard it's the output flange having excessive play and I've also heard it's the crazy amount of slack or play that Ford allowed in the drivetrain. Either way, it is "normal" but it is also an isssue that has yet to have a total fix. Sometimes my clunk/ping noise is so loud people turn and look at my car like something's broken, it's embarrassing, but what can ya do you know?

Not sure where you looked, since there's at least a handful of big threads on this forum about this very thing, since it's really common. Join the club, lol.

Anyways, I would agree that there doesn't appear to be a single solution, but the most common that I've heard of/seen to help was the trans output flange replacement. There's guys that posted their service orders showing what was done on the big thread about this too, the ones that managed to get the dealer to actually look into the problem.

This has been common since these transmissions and engine were released for the MY 2011 Mustangs.

The MT82 clunks....and the 6R80 clunks. That is just normal.

Now sometimes the 6R clunks can be excessive, and IIRC the fix is to remove the shaft lubricate something - it slips my mind right now, but I recall Shaun @ AED sharing the fix for this on the auto cars a few years back.

Thanks guys. I was reading it comes down to the slack with the torsen design. Sounds like acceptance is a reality as long as it doesnt get worse and I start noticing a performance impact. If I get anywhere with my dealer, I'll post.

Thanks man. I'll keep digging. If its easy for you to repost a link to that thread I'd appreciate it. Still unable to find one with a SO.
