Hey guys,

I'm a newb when it comes to racing and track events. I am looking for some advice on getting into tracking my car; there seems to be two near Dallas, Motorsport Ranch and Eagles Canyon Raceway. It looks like Motorsport Ranch is member only, so that may be out of the question. Would love to hear thoughts and advice from any experienced members on where to get started.

Thanks

There are open track days at both tracks and both are a lot of fun. May I suggest going to Eagles Canyon website and signing up for the Toyrun on Dec 6th. it is the cheapest and most layback Track day, its for charity, and its a great way to dip your toe in the water. We will be there with our 2015 and our Twin Turbo 67 Camaro having some fun!

I've done multiple track events at MSR (in my previous car). I have no plans to do Eagle Canyon...because walls. I know a guy who loves taking his Boss 302 to Eagle Canyon and says it is a great track. I just prefer the grassy surroundings at MSR.

I highly recommend doing a TheDriversEdge event at MSR (2 days, 8 track sessions with instructor, 6 classroom sessions). The day after I picked up my new Mustang GT, I registered and got on the waitlist for their Dec MSR run on the 1.7 mi track. IMO, Mustang V8 cars are better suited for the 1.7 mi side because of longer stretches and broader turns. The 1.3 mi side is better suited for lighter and shorter wheelbase cars. Doing the entire track is also fun. I've done all 3 (1.7, 1.3, and entire track) in my previous car. Learning "the line" with driving instructors, as well as the safety info, how to react when you misjudge and find yourself going off the track, etc...is well worth doing a program with a driving instructor.

I also did the Apex program, but I won't do Apex again. My instructor was great, but there were other concerns. PM me if you want more info.

Am currently researching the multiple DFW area Mustang clubs to see which ones do track days.

There is an mustang HPDE event at Texas World Speedway on March 27-29. It is a farewell to TWS celebration. It is being put on by MCA and Track Guys.

I've been going to the track for about 15yrs now. I would recommend either National Auto Sport Association (nasaproracing.com) or Drivers Edge for track time in Texas. Both run good programs with great people.

As for walls at Eagle's Canyon...pretty much all tracks have places where you dont want to go off lol. Drive within your limits and everything will be fine. The bigger problem with ECR for street cars is how hard it is on brakes. Motorsports Ranch Cresson, Texas Word Speedway, and Motorsports Ranch Houston are my recommendations for street cars.

Hey! I think I'm going to shoot to do the one Mar 28-29, can't make it to the one in February. Let me know how it goes.

Also, anyone know about auto cross in Dallas?

I did the Eagles Canyon Raceway charity event in December 2009 in my charged 06. Just brought a child's gift. There were even skilled instructors willing to ride along with you for free when I went, which was great for me because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Hit around 125-30 on there long straight.

Here's a couple pics. The corvette is my Dad's. It was fun racing with Dad.

Melted the center caps of my weld racing wheels!

There are currently 4 groups doing autocross in Dallas -- you can do something every weekend, April through October.
