What happens if we run a wheel without the sensors for a short time? Do we just get a flat tire warning or do we also get a check engine light and a code?

TPMS warning thats it.

Some people who don't want to pay for the sensors don't use them in their winter wheels for example and just get used to the warning.

I've been running without them, you'll get a TPMS message, click OK, then just the TPMS warning light. Everything works fine.

there is no way to
Yes and no. I believe owners have been known to throw a set of sensors inside a piece of PCV pipe, seal the ends and put a schrader valve on it. Then they pump it up and toss it in the trunk somewhere and fugedaboutit.

that doesnt work, not with newer sensors atleast , the sensors go to sleep after a specific period of no movement, they then take rotation to wake them up
