Anybody know the best tire width for a 9 inch rim and also the widest width that can be used?

I believe 275 is as wide as you want to go and maintain the proper profile.

275/40 is the widest that you should be using on 9" wide rims. I'm working with 40-series here because I'm assuming 18" or 19" wheels. 20's would need 35-series tires for a tire diameter comparable to the 19's.

The 'best' tire width kid of depends on what you're looking for. 275/40 and 265/40 will ride a little better than 255/40's or 245/40's, but the handling with the wider sizes won't be quite as precise and the turn in won't be quite as 'crisp' as the two narrower tires even if ultimate grip is slightly higher with the wider ones. Straight line acceleration may favor tires that are mounted on rims of or slightly below "measuring width".

255 is probably ideal on a 9" wheel.

255 is ideal. 275 would be the max without distorting the tire profile.
