Hi folks
Forum is excruciatingly slow tonight and I’ve been unable to search.
I saw an American video featuring an H Pipe fitted to an 18 GT and it sounded fantastic. Are these legal in the UK? Can you hear the difference from inside the car?
Finally, if you have one fitted, what make is it?
Thanks loads
Damian

Hey,

Forums pretty much taking a beating server side due to all the gt500 (US) stuff coming out!

H pipes are legal(ish), depends what side of the law you sit on, but 99% of the time nobody sits on the "wrong" side, yes you'll hear the difference inside the car, and outside more so.

There's loads of variants, and any exhaust shop will also be able to custom make you one if you want something slightly cheaper (Just make sure it's stainless steel of a good quality grading)

go to your local exhaust specialist they'll make you one up out of stainless for less than you'd pay for a mild steel one from the states/uk suppliers there's definitely a power flow in the north east.

Just to clarify.

Technically ANY modifications to your factory standard exhaust that make the vehicle louder than factory standard are illegal, and you could be prosecuted and or fail an MOT.

Fact it hardly ever happens especially to the more performance orientated vehicles, is really down to luck more than anything to be honest.

So by all means fit H-pipes, X-pipes, cat backs, or anything else you wish, but be aware that they are ALL technically illegal if the noise level noticeably increases over factory fitted exhaust noise levels, (and that is only measured by opinion of the officer or tester, actual noise measurements do not need to be taken) so if you get caught using them by the police on the street you could be charged if they are having an off day.

We have fitted a variety of different brands of H pipe. We ended up getting our own one made. The principle reason being that the market leader design relies on a but joint with a double ended sleeve joiner. This needs to grip the cut exhaust and the H pipe - it struggles to grip on the shiny new H Pipe and consequently can allow the joint to rotate which affects the tailpipe alignment as the muffler can rotate. Our H Pipe is available on our store here:
