Not exactly sure why some freak out over changing the thermostat, but doing so, under the right circumstances and without dropping the temp too low isn't a big deal at all....It's actually a good thing.

I did a lot of data logging on this topic and first, one of the reasons the hotter OEM thermostat is to aid in cleaner emissions numbers. With the 190* OEM t-stat in my car, with a standard flow coolant (water) pump, a low RPM cruise in 10th gear at 45 to 50 MPH across the ground, my coolant temps ran 202* to 203* and CHT nearly 10* hotter than coolant temp. This is with OAT at 78* and somewhat high RH.

I installed the Reische 170* t-stat, which, in the same ambient conditions, cruise RPM and speed across the ground (important to note the amount of relative wind into the radiator), dropped the coolant temp to 183* to 184* and CHT to right at 190*. Of course, different ambient conditions/season, will yield different results, but in SE AL, a huge help to drop the t-stat to a 170. In a month or so, I'll be changing my coolant pump to the high flow pump used on the 5.2, which will drop the temps another 10 to 12 degrees (as seen on a different test platform, 5.0 Coyote with a Reische 170 t-stat in slightly hotter ambient conditions).

A couple things to note though....first, only buy a high-quality thermostat from a reputable source. The stories about taking a brand new t-stat out of the box, installing it and then finding out it's not the correct temp are very real. It's worth it, prior to installing, regardless of the source, to put the new t-stat in a pot of water on the stove with a thermometer and validate that it opens at the desired temperature. Make sure though that the thermometer isn't touching the thermostat or the bottom of the pot.

Next, if you don't already have one, spend a few bucks on a vacuum refiller. This allows you to draw a vacuum on your cooling system to ensure there are no existing hidden issues or issues brewing and if not, fill your cooling system without inducing air that can lead to possible hot pockets in your cooling system.

As far as the tuner "tuning a 170," he's not actually doing anything that affects the thermostat itself, as it's a thermo-mechanical device, but instead, changing the temp that the fans come on.

Hey there! I would say one of our more popular sellers is that Thermostat upgrade. Especially the 170. I would say for such a affordable upgrade, it would be worth it for your car!

Feel free to reach out to us here at Lethal Performance and we'll be glad to help you further! Thanks!

This is the one I was referring to ---> Reische Performance FORD-50 GEN-2 170° Performance Thermostat
