I'm a big fan of Polish Angel but there are other very good coatings too. THIS is an article on Detail Image by one of the detail professionals that I thought you folks might find of interest. Straight talk from an industry professional. Enjoy!

That article is simple common sense. You get what you put into something, which is essentially what we should all know by now.

Additionally there is some pretty clear bias being as how they receive free products and post on a website that wants to sell you more and more, but still overall good reminder to use common sense when reading marketing materials.

Why are these coatings so expensive? Is it because they do a paint correction before hand? I mean... this takes as much time as properly waxing the car essentially.

It could be that reason. I think it's because coatings adheres to the Clearcoat more than a sealant and wax would. I have a coat of Cilajet on my mustang and what I noticed before and after was that it gave it a high clarity and wet look to my paint. I'm planning on buying chemical guys carbon flex C9 and doing the application myself when the time is ready. I know for a fact that this doesn't protect from rock chips or scratches or swirls. As PatrickGT mentioned, it is common sense and knowing the product you are purchasing.

Yeah but you can buy the material (let's call it) for a small fraction of the $1K cost I keep getting quoted for this work. That does include paint correction but paint correction by itself is hundreds upon hundreds cheaper. Just confusing.

If you are getting quoted $1K for full paint correction and a coating then that is average to below average pricing for those services.

I got quoted 800 for coating everything including wheels from my dealer when I got mine done. The process can be very rigourous, stressful, and time consuming. That's why it's so much. Wash->claybar-> paint correction->another wash to remove and leftover compound or polish->coating->2nd coat if necessary. Coatings can take up to 24hrs to cure. Process of paint correction is either fast or slow depending on the polisher you are using.

There is way more to it than what you listed, but yes it is a ton of work.

I think a lot of times people get confused, they think a "detail" is the same as the "detail" they got at the corner car wash... nah fam, let's be real here. You need a REAL detail after one of those to correct the paint issues they just installed...

... I dont know about anyone else, but I still prefer my Wolfgang 3.0 Sealant. And I know these coatings are stronger and last longer, but geez the cost to me is just not worth it. Wolfgang may only last what 6 months? But it goes on super easy...no waiting for it to "flash". It goes on super fast...none of this "do a 2'x2' section at a time stuff. But a bottle of Wolfgang lasts forever and I really don't mind putting a new coat on every 6 months...not that big a deal to me.
