Tall beltlines

Anyone else notice how tall the beltlines have gotten on pony cars? When I park my S550 next to my 88 GTA the difference in beltline, front end and hood height is amazing. The mustang looks huge.

Wow, that is interesting. I had an 88 TA and I would have sworn it was a bigger car.
Quick check shows Firebird length at 195" , Mustang at 188"
Height, FB=49" Mustang=54"
The picture looks like an optical illusion!

I would say its the proportions of the mustang is why it looks so big. Overall height and length are roughly the same but there is so much more fender to the mustang in the front and I bet you the trunk has twice the room of that GTA without being connected to the passenger compartment. Makes for an overall bigger car.

All pony cars are huge now a days. I park my wifes 15 next to my 95GT and it looks like a toy car compared to hers.

It's hilarious to me that people think of old cars as these massive land yachts but in reality, older cars are quite small in comparison to some of today's offerings.

Compare the 2010 Challenger versus a 1970 Challenger. The 2010 looks like a Monster.

When the world thaws, I'll pull out my '73 Javelin AMX and compare to my Mustang.

Also, modern cars have to be more aerodynamic for fuel efficiency/performance. So cars are now generally lower or the bodywork goes lower than older cars.

Newer cars have also gotten heavier and therefore need bigger brakes. Larger brakes need larger wheels to clear. Big wheels need big fenders and big fenders need tall beltlines. 20s are now a regular thing on cars and they look OK. A 2004 or older mustang looks ridiculous with anything more than 18s along with most older cars
