I am having problems with my 2017 Mustang playing MP3 files from a USB drive. The car is a 2017 with the basic SYNC system - 4.2" screen, single CD player, 6-speakers.

I have my MP3 files organized on the USB drive into seperate folders. The MP3 files have the track #, title name, album name, and artist information all stored in them. In each directory, there is also an M3U file that contains a list of all the MP3 files. These M3U files contain nothing but a list of the filenames, no extra information is included, I create these files just using Notepad. The USB drive brand is a Kingston, but I have also tried a Lexar and SanDisk drive, always 16Gb. I did try a Staples brand drive, but it skipped badly. The USB drive stays in the car, never gets removed, except for troubleshooting or adding files (which doesn't happen that often).

My 2010 Focus also has the SYNC system, and it works fine. Once I have selected USB, I can say stuff like :

Play album Led Zeppelin
Play track You shook me
Play artist Average White Band
Play playlist Cut the Cake

...and everything plays fine. Giving the command "play album", the album plays all the tracks in the order they have been set in the MP3 tag. Giving the command "play playlist", the tracks will play in the order of the playlist, which is 99% of the time the same as the track list.

When I try doing this in the Mustang, I have problems. When I say "play album Led Zeppelin", the screen comes up with a list of tracks, and asks me to select a number, or say "none of the above" (or something similar). If I say a number, it will play that track repeatedly. If I say "none of the above" it replies "my mistake", and goes back to playing whatever it was playing before. I have tried saying "play" or "play all", but it usually mis-interprets this as a track number, and goes off and plays those track. When I say "play playlist Cut the Cake", it will play the whole album but NOT in the order of the playlist. Playing track or playing artist doesn't seem to be a problem.

Like I said, all the MP3s are correctly tagged with the track #, track name, album name, and artist. I try and not include any other information, I know windows player likes to go off and find out lots of other information, but I usually stop it when it tries to do this in the computer.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem?

I found there was an MP3 attribute called "part of a compilation" which was only visible on my work Windows 7 PC. I keep an old Windows XP machine around that never connects to the internet to do stuff like this on, and that attribute was not visible in either Windows XP file properties, or the MP3 tag program I was using.

I then downloaded a program called MP3IDKill or something like that, which basically wipes out all the MP3 tags and leaves you with a bare file. I then re-tagged the files with just the track #, artist name, track title, and album. I did a master SYNC reset on the Mustang, and then put in the USB drive. It still has the same problem.

Maybe STYNC on the Mustang isn't as smart as the one in the Focus. Or maybe it's too smart for it's own good, and isn't as forgiving with MP3 tags.
