I saw one local guy do it, its doable depends on how much you want to push them out

anything more then 5-8 mm you need to switch to a adapter with studs on it so you can get the proper safe amount of turns on the lug nuts.

Most cases I have my local cnc shop make me custom ones and their forged aluminum but price is killer for them in a good way.

You'll probably need thicker ones than is safe with normal spacers.

I've used bolt on spacers on 2 03 Cobras (both 500+ whp) and my 11 gt (585 whp) all with no downside. Upside is it makes the car look real good. Spend the money and get ones that bolt on. Make sure your wheels have recesses where stock studs can stick into through the spacer and you're good to go.

Measure how far out you want to move them. Then get spacers that thick. Bolt on ones. MMR makes some for sure. There are cheaper versions on eBay. Get with need4speed above. Good guy and knows his stuff on wheels and fitment.

I'd honestly suggest shopping some rims with the offset you'd like and selling these. Spacers above 3-5mm or so really start changing the geometry of the car and put extra stress on the hubs.

The most I'd do is 5mm and consider getting some ARP studs.

Using a spacer changes geometry exactly as using a wheel with a different offset does. Using a 20mm spacer on your stock wheel with its 48mm backspacing ends up with 28mm backspacing, which applies exactly the same leverage and force on the hub as installing a set of aftermarket wheels with the same backspacing. There is no miracle magic force created by the spacer compared to the wheel.

Assuming you use quality hubcentric spacers with proper mounting hardware, installed correctly, you are just as well off as installing aftermarket wheels. Of course you do not gain the decreased weight advantage of quality wheels, but you end up with similar fitment.

And since I am currently working on some papers for my masters program, here is a citation:

So a spacers changes loads but a wheel with a higher offset from center doesn't?

Show me the math.

anyone know where to get 5mm spacers that will fit the mustang? I just need 2. I tried ebay, but am not sure of fit. I know its a 144.3 bolt pattern but not sure of other measurements. thanks.

5mm would be about 1/5". 1/4" would be too thick on stock studs. 1/8" would be .125 (5mm is about .20). 5mm may even be too thick but I have limited experience with those types of spacers. I don't like them and the lug thread engagement sacrifice.

144.3 is also 5 on 4 1/2" bolt circle. May have more luck finding them by that criteria.

I know ecosnake grabbed them off of Amazons since he showed me which ones he was getting when I checked something for him.

Just put in the following

5x114.3 or 5x4.5 5 mm spavers

CB 70.5

you can grab a set of hubcentric for like 40 bucks tops

Adapters would be to thick wouldn't they? Cause you have to get them thick to cover the existing lugs right?

The thing with adapters is then you have to check torque on 2 sets of lugs essentially. You have to torque the adapter first, then mount the wheel on that, and then torque the wheel down to the adapter.
