Wow, awesome pics man! And yes, nearly 187 mph is flying. I'm a huge IndyCar fan and go to 1-2 races per year. The cars hit around 190 mph on the back straight at Portland International Raceway with a draft in full downforce trim (I think they're making ~9,000+ lbs of downforce at that speed), and I can get within 15-20 feet or so of the track at the braking point for the 130 mph turn out of the back straight. Talk about exhilarating. When the Indycars all whizz by in a race it's a sight to behold (and feel and hear). The Indy500 is awesome, too, but my one Indy 500 race I was in the boxes so not as close, but 225-230 mph down the straight in the race is really fast, even from the boxes. Last year in a practice one driver hit 243+ mph on the back straight!I just thought it was a neat observation that I wanted to share.
The winner is.......
The GT500 at 186.8 mph (unmodified)
A close second is the Shinkansen at 176 mph.
To be fair, if you modified a GT500, it would beat the top end speed of the bullet train. However, you'd be out of gas in 25 minutes. It kind of reminds me of flying the T-38 in afterburner. You can go fast, but not for long (20 mins to flame out in full burner)
Disclaimer..... 186.8 mph is serious business. The car was prepped and safery equipment were installed. The car was driven on a track with safety responders available. Don't be that kook (like the guy who got banned from here) to drive those kind of speeds on public roads.
Here's a couple of parting gifts from my day in kyoto.
Ps, I still haven't seen any mustangs here in Japan so far.
