1. Negotiate the price of the car, this includes freight.
2. Apply any incentives.
3. Negotiate the price of the trade, if any.
4. Negotiate financing if necessary.
5. TTL is up to the buyer, the State sets those taxes and fees.
This sums it up nice. The "out the door" price being quoted be the dealer is a smoke screen to hide from the buyer how much they are actually paying for the car, how little they are getting on trade, and where they dealer is tacking on extras to increase their margin.

Don't be afraid to walk out. 24 hours will make a dealer change their tune and they will call you with a new set of numbers they couldn't possibly do the night before.

When the dealer calls you to get you to come back, you have the upper hand.

This. I have a cousin who slung metal for years with Mazda. He has always told me to not be afraid to walk. The moment they call back you have 'em where you want 'em.

You probably don't even need to have "X-plan" pricing in your pocket. Just mentioning it to the dealer will likely be good enough to get the negotiating going. As soon as I mentioned it to the dealer I bought mine from, they knew what they had to beat to get my business. So they offered me $800 under X-plan or invoice pricing. Worst case scenario, if they really need an xplan #, you can join the MCA and get one. I paid the $50 and joined anyway.

All this x plan is bs. Is how much you can negotiate. Always be ready to walk the fuck out! Mustangs are dime and dozen nothing special at all unless is a Shelby.
