I wouldn't be surprised if the "550 watts" is peak power. Half of that, or 275w, is program power, and half of program, or 137.5w, is average power (what most call RMS). That's total system power (and only if you're driving every channel at 100% power, which you aren't

The system is rather anemic, so it wouldn't surprise me if my assumption is correct. But then, if the speakers have terrible efficiency ratings, then I suppose power could be 275 watts average rather than 137.5. After all, it takes double the power to increase SPL 3dB, which is just a perceptible increase in level.
