It is supposed to enhance the driver experience by adding engine sound to the cockpit. I think it just adds noise. Ripped mine out years ago.

I am hearing impaired too. 60% or more!
It droning made me crszier than i already am. Lol
Wife even notice the difference.
As to the price of the kit from lmr if you factor in gasoline prices to look all over hell to find stuff, delivered to my door was 20 odd bucks.
And it worked great!
