Self-Inflicted Damage

In your attempts to keep your car safe and sound, have you caused any damage? I've had mine for a year and dd it. When I park, I find a spot away from others, look for islands, etc. The other day I was doing my normal routine of pulling as close to the island as I could so whomever parked next to me wouldn't leave a ding. Well, instead I left a tiny scrape on my front wheel as I rubbed the curb :doh: Minor damage, for sure. And I am very fortunate that as of today this is the worst that has occurred. In fact it was so minor, it isn't even worth posting a picture. But it still annoys me every time I look at it.

Yes man that's the way it goes. I spent an entire weekend cleaning out the horrendous garage where I used to live, and sure enough one day I didn't pull in quite far enough. When I closed the garage door, a tiny metal tab scraped the outer most part of the rear bumper. Heck of a nice scar.

My motto is "it's not yours until you **** it up." I buy a lot of expensive toys and that's critical for me to remember.

I did the exact same thing earlier this year. Tried getting as close to the curb as possible and scratched my front wheel. Feels bad man.

I have a 24"x12" concrete slab setting behind my left rear tire. When I back into the garage the tire touches the pad and I have 3" clearance to close the garage door. Me and my daughter went for a ride last Sunday and upon returning and backing into the garage spot for some reason I asked her to look and see if the door would clear the car. She said no way, and I got out and looked and for damned sure that garage door would have come down right on top of the front end. So now I'm bitchin' because there was three other people at home plus my dog and nobody knows how the slab got moved. There's a few things that I'm sure of here. Me and the daughter didn't do it. The dog didn't do it. The house didn't shrink and the car didn't grow. What did I learn here? I ain't gonna use a remote garage door opener unless I pull in, close the door and back up to it using the rear camera. Best, CB

I pulled a stick of antiperspirant out of my center console in 90 degree weather not even thinking... took off the cap and ended up with a lap and seat full of liquid antiperspirant... to this day I can not get the stain out!

I scraped underneath the splitter on a curb when parking in a diagonal parking space shortly after getting the car. :headbonk: You can feel the damage if you run your hand underneath but there is no visible damage.
A couple wheels and tires have some decent scrapes and one tire has a little chunk missing.
I recently discovered my first ding below the passenger door (at an angle where you can't immediately see it) which looks like it may have been caused by going off the track briefly at HDPE, and hubster ran into a cone at said track, scuffing and scraping the corner of the bumper pretty badly (all buffed out, thankfully).
There are surface scratches in the paint from "touchless" car washes, too. Don't hate me! The interior still looks perfect, however.

KITT has def sustained some battle scars her first year and a week on the road, but she's got almost 17k on her already :ford:

Felt like I was going to puke, Really

1) I do the same thing with parking. I backed into a corner spot with my 2013 GT where I couldn't possibly get a ding. Using my backup camera to get in, I ran the corner of the bumper into a brick column. Gouged my bumper bad, I went for a spot repair that I never liked.

2) Then shortly after, I bought new pair of rubber gloves for winter washing. I didn't realize that the gloves had a fine grit molded into them for grip. It was like I took sandpaper all over the car where my glove slipped off the wash mitt. After a $650 paint correction an polish, still not good enough for my picky self

3) The whole Takada airbag thing made me nervous too. My car was born in VA Beach (high temp and humidity)

SOLUTION - I traded it for a new Ruby 2016 GTP, life is good again (for now)

I am super paranoid of the garage door. It's a bit overboard but I NEVER close it until I get out and check that the car is fully inside. Never.
Also, when I need to move the car out to our short driveway to make space to move boxes or whatever, I always move it fully, not halfway outside, even if not necessary for my needs. I am deathly afraid that somehow the button will be pressed or there will be some electrical malfunction, causing the door to slam down onto the car!

On my S197 I scraped, and dented, the back right wheel fender within 2 months of owning the car in 2008. I was not used to the width of the car so backing into my driveway up in NYC was actually impossible (but didn't realize that until it was too late).

It sucked, but the damage wasn't too bad and I just never got it repaired. I actually came to appreciate it because it was unique, and was a reminder of my noobness when I started learning stick.

I did the same to my wife's new Honda Odyssey back in '04 when we first purchased it. Car was a few weeks old, and I kept telling her we either had to touch the fridge with the front bumper or take a chance with the door hitting it. It was the last time we parked it in the garage.

The garage has more room parking the Mustang than my Sport Trac. I use the "Park Zone" laser parking aid. Been using it for years and it works well and lasts a good while with aa batteries. Before using it, the door came down and hit the hitch of the truck.

Hey at least you have a good perspective! I just got mine back from the dealership body shop after my dad backed into it. You can see the metallic flake difference for sure and I'm having the "it's no longer perfect" sadness. Gotta change my perspective.

This happens more than people realize...last month at a car show I was talking to a gear-head that works at a local body-shop. He told me that his shop had seen a rash of what you described. That's my biggest fear of pulling into the garage - did I pull far enough in!
