Would be required to pay a new 2.5 percent use tax for the privilege. The group says that by enforcing the new 2.5 percent use tax, it would raise up to $30 million for the city.
Ah yes, the good ol' "pay more money and the government will change the weather."

Of course no details on what the city will do with that $30 million

Reading that nearly made my skin crawl.

“Thanks for working hard and having the ability to afford a $50k vehicle. Unfortunately, we don’t feel that should be your right to purchase because it doesn’t fit our clear air agenda, which is at best a soy-milk fueled tirade to attack the right for clean air which is largely effected by beater cars that are 15-20 years old, horrific roadway infrastructure and severe overpopulation. However, we are sure we will save the life of at least one rare blue speckled fart whistle by preventing you from doing what you want with your own money.”

Let's say this law passes. Then what? People spend less money on their cars. So rich people have cheaper cars and more money sitting in the bank, and less money going out into the local economy. How does that benefit anyone?

The only thing I can imagine is either people buy elsewhere or they move away. And yes it will hurt the local economy. No doubt about that.
