All this conjecture seems silly to me. The cars aren't comparable. The older mustangs weren't shaped and influenced by Obama era regulations. A lot of the cost, and weight, in the s550 is modern safety equipment.

Now, when you wreck your s550 because you put on a whipple and overcharged the engine, which exploded when you pushed it showing off, and sent you into a wall or tree, now you will walk away, instead of being carried away.

I'm good with modern cars. The s550 is much more sophisticated than my s197, and is way more capable.

Feel free to drive your Fox Mustang. My wife's Escape will out accelerate and out handle you.

I do like the simplicity, light weight and low cost of the Fox Mustangs, but I'd much rather drive a new Mustang.

Not off the line. Not from a dig. Same thing for the present GT. Sure given enough room it is faster stock. But on the street you may be surprised. Stop reading the specifications and race one at the traffic lights - In Mexico...

Which ones are you referring to? The IIHS isn't the government, and the OEMs are driven to exceed the standards of the IIHS tests to sell safer cars. That, and the huge increase in the amount of electronics for infotainment/nice to haves are the primary reason cars have gotten larger and heavier, outside of the fact that cars have done that for decades as the model progresses in life (people want larger, roomier, more features).

I’ll talk plainer. The old two valve 5.0 put all the torque low down where you wanted it like a real hot rod.

The engine was never the problem, the suspension was. The only car that could beat me was a Corvette and he needed a few blocks to do that. However, if the street we had to cross had ruts in the road from heavy traffic I was toast and the Vette would just drive away from me. On smooth road that car could move and things were different.

Your findings about the S550 are true for all nameplates that have been around for 50+ years. Go test drive a 1988 Porsche 930 and a 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S back-to-back if you think the Mustang has changed.

The Mustang hasn't lost anything except 'lightness', which speaks volumes about its suspension considering it'll out-handle and ride smoother than any factory Fox ever did. It's a heavy car with actual sound insulation and modern suspension, and power everything, which allows for a decent, muted ride and rail-like handling. I recently sold an '82 Mustang that I could hardly believe was ever a coveted automobile. Rough, loud, slow, and everything made out of questionable metal and God-awful plastics. It's amazing how low standards were back then. To think that my sister's '79 Mustang was so cool in my childhood eyes is baffling to me now. Times have really changed, thankfully.

I used to actually have the ability to put a car through its paces when I lived in Wyoming, but rarely now that I live in the congested mess called Dallas. So, I just sit back and enjoy all the thoughtful touches and smooth ride of my '18. I recommend you also enjoy the fruits of Ford's labor. You're not going to get into a truly 'raw' car unless you build one, or buy someone else's old headache out of a barn and file bankruptcy a few months later. IMO, cars are about as good now as they're ever going to be. It's downhill into the electric-hybrid penalty box from here.

I was driving in the early seventies. We had small blocks to big blocks in Mopar. Ford and Chevy. I liked them all. I like new Mustangs also. Comparing those old cars to my new Mustang, The Mustang is a luxury car with a nice engine to me.

The funny thing is that keeping the V8 in all models but cutting out creature comforts means that the cheapest Mustang is also the fastest cause it’s lighter. Pay less and get a faster car? What an idea! But Ford won’t go for that. Pity...
Didn't they go for that at least once in the Mustang's life, with the Fox-body LX?

Well at least the Mustang EV will be an honest car as no shifting required. All cars we be self-driving so you can enjoy the ride even more. But you can put your virtual reality headset on and pretend you are driving to work in whatever car you want. There is always that...

Yup the future...

BTW guys...

When you say “rough, loud, slow” to describe Fox bodies, remember that is how I describe the present car’s when talking about EVs. Too funny!
