I am not a CAFE expert, but if success of F150 Lightning contributed to S650 having a V8, why did that CUV thing need to wear a pony? Did it have to have the same name? I thought the company just had to have a certain number of electric vehicles or zero emission vehicles to offset others they sell.

It’s all the EV’s that contributed to the ability of retaining the V8, Mach E included. My guess is they attached the Mustang name to help with sales. It’s selling like hotcakes so the name must have helped with that

I think it would have sold just fine on its own merits. It’s actually a really
nice E SUV, maybe even the nicest looking of all imho. But, it isn’t a Mustang.

Won’t get any arguments from me, it likely would’ve done just fine on its own. I like them as well, will probably get one in a few years when my son starts driving

From the first page of Google

"Ford sold 2,324 Mach-Es in September, a 47% increase from last year, bringing the total to 28,089 in 2022."

Mustang didn't sell much better in 22, " 36,598 "

I like that documentary very much. I like the part with Gale Halderman the best. I also have a huge amount of respect for Dave P., and I am pretty sure Ford does to. He would make a great CEO at Ford.

If you aren't the chairman, someone at some point in time is going to tell you 'how you feel' about something. You do it to keep feeding your passion and the ability to affect change. If you get tossed, you don't get to shape anything.

Keep in mind Carol Shelby was forced to create the first GT350. He reeeeeally didn't want to but Ford was footing the bill for his racing. If he didn't do it, Ford would have shut his water off and what would their racing history look like today?

My point is don't act like they had to slap the mustang name on that thing for S650 to get a proper V8 because of some fuel economy rule. It shouldn't have had it and likely didn't need it. No-one knows for sure what they would do in Pericak's shoes...but I am pretty sure I would have walked. I abhor that thing.

I agree, I think it is a cheap marketing ploy, a heritage grab, and faux legitimacy. This time the marketing guys won and as Mags said above, they are using it to sell more cars.

One of my favorite movies honestly...thought it was really well done. Pericak lost some respect in my eyes though when he got on board with putting the Mustang name and pony on that grocery getter appliance. Don't tell me he knows what a Mustang is and then he gets behind that monstrosity. I would have fallen on my sword over that...full stop. I also think they caved on the exhaust sound of the 15-17 GT due to international pressures...it was way too quiet. Quiet mode on my Mach 1 seems louder than my stock 16 GT did.
Actually, it was Jim Farley who mandated using the Mustang moniker on the Mach-e...

It is most definitely a marketing ploy. It may be the beginning of a sub-brand plan which I've read that now GM is considering with the Corvette line. Instead of the Mustang being a one vehicle line, it would now be a brand name spread over several models. I've heard rumors that Ford may also considering this for the Bronco as well.

I'm not sure I agree with this approach, but briefly having worked for a couple of marketing firms in the past, emotions are the number one engagement point for many purchases and I'm assuming that with EV's expected to run the table here in the future, transportation companies are going to need something to engage potential buyers. Native brand recognition like Ford, GM or Stellantis or whatever they're called now, aren't going to be enough to do it.

They're will be those diehards like many of us here who won't, or will be slow to accept this philosophy, but it is hard to refute decades of brand building and the resultant sales.

Getting back to the documentary.. I really liked it myself. I don't try to read too much into it from a production perspective, but it does give you some behind the scenes of what actually goes into the design and development of these cars. I have Amazon Prime, but bought the DVD as well.
