Just wanted to update this thread in case someone comes across it in the future. I replaced the battery and the car idled nice and smooth now. Seems like an unlikely fix but it worked.

I would imagine if the battery had a bad cell the alternator's regulator would be working harder to keep the battery charged. Therefore you may find some current variance and the engine idle is sensitive to the alternators regulation. Just a thought.
