I've owned my car for around 3.5 months now. I wash it religiously every Monday with a foam cannon and a microfiber mitt.

Over the weekend I was using some quick detail spray to get to bird crap and bugs off and a brown speck caught my eye on the hood. It was a real tiny rock chip but it looks to be rusted. I can put a pic up if that'll help.

But if the hood is aluminum and it's just clear coat and paint....how is there rust or is it something else? Another thing that crossed my mind is that there might be actual metal in the paint...but turning to rust that fast??

Thoughts?

Thanks

The hood is aluminum so it should not be "rusting". Aluminum hoods will corrode (my hood is) but that will be a white powder material and not a brown powder like steel. So its possible that there was some type of dirt or other contamination in the paint when it came from the factory but I don't think it is rust.

It's metal dust in the paint that's rusting.

You need to clay bar your car.

So the clay will pull it all out and then let me seal and then wax over top?

I already have CG Jet Seal and Colinite 845.

Thanks

Update...spoke to the guy at the Ford collision center that's working on another repair (trunk lid bubbling behind the GT badge). He said he has seen what I'm talking about on F150's and such where some foreign contaminant gets on the car prior to it being painted and causes this.

I'm not sure which it was...heat coating or e-coating...but he also said that whichever of those is under the paint...can also have issues if contaminated.

Essentially, when I bring the car in for the trunk badge repair I'm going to let them look at it.

I noticed the same thing on my car one week after purchase. I used a clay bar and a soapy water solution to remove the contamination. I then put a layer of wax on the car. I haven't had any issues since applying the wax.

Wanted to come back to this and post an update...

I took my car to the service manager and he looked at it and said "oh ok, what most likely happened is a piece of metal got stuck under the wrapping when packaged for transport and then rusted....give me 10 minutes and I'll have my guys buff that out for you"

...looks perfect now!!!
