Well with less than 500 miles I was on the interstate today and a rock flew up from a semi truck and knicked my window. Its really not to bad or noticable but its going to bother me. Anyone have any experience with safelites repair process? Thoughts?

Took a hit on my 2016 GT/CS couple of weeks back. Road debris these days is awful. Do you have glass coverage on your insurance . I carry it . No out of cost pocket coin if a new windshield is needed. I have used this coverage before. State Farm is the insurer. Glad the hit was not bad.............

No I do not have the glass coverage. The damage probably wouldnt qualify for a replacement anyway. It s a tiny knick. Its just one of those things I will notice and will drive me crazy. May not even really need the repair I just want to minimize how visible it is to me.

I have Allstate and they consider glass repair comprehensive with $100 deductible. But, they also fix glass nicks and chips for free. Basically, the repair technician that came out to fix my Ranger said if he could feel the spot with his fingernail then it wasn't repairable.

Oh, and because its a windshield it doesn't count as a claim against your account, even though it's ran through comprehensive.

Last time that happened to me, I bought a kit from auto zone to repair it. It was still noticeable, but did not spread. For $10, you really can't lose.

I got my windshield replaced for free with Safelite in FL. They did a great job can't even tell a difference from the factory version. Even did it while I was at work so I didn't have to go to any shops.

Safelite is usually always free with comprehensive coverage from insurance. My wife just had one filled in for her Renegade and I can barely tell it had a chip to begin with. Probably less than a dime in overall size.

The main thing they always say is when the chip occurs, put a piece of tape over it right away. If dirt gets into the crack, then it will show even more. Unforunately, some rocks lodge dirt into the crack when the hit happens so it's hard to do that.

I've used Safelite twice before for windows chips and both times have been great.

A rock hit my windshield last Tues. while I was on vacation. I had it repaired when I got home on Wed. by Safelite. Then had a rock hit it again today and they're coming again tomorrow. I barely even heard the rock hit today and I was joking with my wife, "There goes the windshield again!", only to find out a couple miles up the road that it did actually chip again.

These windshields are apparently easily damaged according to the internet. I did some research today and saw a lot of negative comments. They're made by Carlite and called Soundscreen. Lots of people are complaining about "sandblasted" and chipped or pitted windshields. Seems like they can't take the abuse that "normal" windshields can. As with pies and plastics, not all formulations are equal. I've also noticed that some European car companies are making their glass thinner to save weight. Wouldn't surprise me to find out that the plastic middle layer is thicker and the glass on either side is thinner than normal.

I, for one, cannot afford to have it replaced every time I drive it. So, I'll keep having it repaired until I cannot.

FL ihas no deductible on windshields, Progressive told me it's the law and glass is covered under comprehensive and it's included by law. I had a pebble kick up and chip my windshield and it started to crack and spread within 12 hours, this wasn't on my Stang. Progressive uses Safelite and they did a good job.

Here's a quote from Carlite's website...

"Acoustic vinyl also helps engineers improve fuel economy because the acoustic vinyl’s sound dampening properties offset the need for thicker, heavier glass."

Which could be read "this glass is thinner"...
