When referring to the combustion in a car engine, how do you use the term detonation ?

  • Detonation only refers to the spontaneous ignition of air/fuel that causes knock

  • Detonation is used to describe any ignition of the air/fuel regardless of the source or location.

one could suggest that Detonation is the uncontrolled ignition of air / fuel inside the combustion chamber

Fuel normally burns in a controlled way in an engine. If it explodes (detonates) that is bad.
