I MAY have a blown engine. RHD 2018 GT 10 speed 3,200 Klms. Driving at walking pace past some show homes that we were inspecting I heard a light metallic sound as if I’d driven over something. Engine stopped. Maybe lucky it wasn’t going fast at high RPM.

A few drops of fluid trail on the road. I smelt it. Not water condensation from AC. Underneath a small pool of fluid. About 5”.

Visual under car using phone video I see nothing unusual.

I’m guessing if it had happened at high RPM major damage may have happened.

Car will not turn over under it’s own battery. Ford roadside assist connected a battery booster and I turned it over and it made bad noises so I stopped cranking it in case it started.

t’s going to the dealer to check. It had had its free service two days earlier - about 200 Klms earlier.

Car has never been thrashed or tracked. Once warm it’s been driven daily the way it should be but no misuse.

I am guessing dropped Cam Belt?

By “free service” do you mean first oil change?

And don’t beat yourself up over this. You did nothing wrong. Trust me on that! 3,200 km (2000 miles) - sounds about right...

Ford made a bad batch of engines for 2018 but are strangely quiet about it. They will rebuild it if this is what I think it is... look around this site and youtube for more knowledge and comfort. I truly hope it’s something minor but there is an issue with the motors and it happens quick... some have Ford buy it back but the laws are different outside the States. I saw a new but used GT on the dealer lot two days or so ago. It probably had the bad motor and the owner gave it back.

Check the coolant tank for signs of oil. Rhd cars have a totally different oil cooler arrangement to lhd cars.
Sadly it’s a well documented fault on rhd that ford isn’t fixing and didn’t change on my18. Our oil coolers fail randomly and mix oil with coolant. One guy had his replaced under warranty only for the same fault to occur within a thousand miles.

Right from the first rhd s550’s this part has remained the same.

If this is your problem, do not let ford palm you off with an engine flush like they do to some people. Insist on a new engine or buy back.
Streetfighter and Harrop in Australia have both developed proper kits to remove the defective factory part totally from the oil pathway. In the UK JWRacing have developed something similar to the Streetfighter solution (an additional oil block) using the Mishimoto oil cooler.

The Harrop solution looks to be the best design as the oil block has the oil take off for the cooler, thus not requiring the installation of a sandwich plate under the filter in an already very tight to access area.

Thanks guys. The 3,000 Klms service doesn’t involve any oil changes.

I had a 17 and was aware of the RHD coolant issue. No problems in coolant or oil. All clear.. Thanks

I’ll have a look around for 18 engine issues,

Sorry for late reply. Just found this thread again. Dealer took one look at it through the Sump plug hole and within 3 days Ford Australia delivered a new engine. Dealer installed it. All good.

I love my Mustangs

Did they explain what had happened to the engine?

It's good to hear that even in Upside-down Land, Ford took excellent care of you and replaced the engine.

I spoke to the Foreman, who is the only mechanic at the dealership who deals with serious issues. Good bloke. He showed me the debris in the bottom of the sump thru the sump plug hole. Cylinder two was the problem.

A condition of Ford supplying a brand new engine is that Ford gets to pull it apart to find out what went wrong.

I think they wanted mine in particular because it let go at idle RPM at walking pace. So less damage than one at 7,400 RPM. I’m guessing.

New engine is great. Thanks
