Hey guys, new here just had a question about the reverse lockout.

I'm working on a design for a gated shifter for a friend that would replace the shift boot. He has a 2019 GT Premium with the 6MT, and it looks like a gated shifter would mean removing reverse lockout. I don't think this is a problem since the gates would be pretty obvious and accidentally putting the car into reverse would (hopefully) not be common.

My question though is how close is 1st to reverse? My understanding of reverse lockout is that it allows you to slot into reverse, which would be in a different slot or gate on the gated shifter. My friend is worried that 1st and reverse are in the same 'slot' meaning that pulling on the shifter puts the car into reverse in the same gate as 1st and not just allowing it to be moved into another slot like I thought. I wouldn't think they are in the same place, but obviously if they are the same slot and reverse lockout differentiates between the two I would either have to ditch the idea or work around the reverse lockout.
