Replacing factory sub - 2 ohm or 4 ohm?

I asked this on a couple other threads, but thought a dedicated thread would get more responses and help others going forward.

I want to replace the factory sub in my '18 (401a) with a Rockford Fosgate Punch 8". It comes in both 2 ohm and 4 ohm versions. Which should I use and why?

id go 2ohm, you get more power for same watts, and the factory amp is nothing to brag about @ 100 something watts. I'd only use 2ohm. 4ohm reduces sound output.

4 ohm would only reduce sound output if it was higher than factory, correct? Does anyone know the factory sub ohm rating?

no. the wiring or ohms to stock speaker is always the same. its the speaker that matters.

ie. my car has stock rear speakers that are 4ohm. I replaced them with 3ohm, its less resistance, so they will play louder. If I put a 8ohm replacement speaker, they will play lower sound.

the tweeter is 8ohm I think in dash, if you put 4 ohm or 2 ohm they will be louder.


here's example. you have 2 identical subs a 2ohm and 4ohm sub you are replacing factory with.

one will be louder than other, regardless of whatever stock sub was.

I think we’re talking about two different things. I think you are saying that the 2 ohm replacement sub would be louder than the 4 ohm replacement sub, which I get. My question is, how would each of those compare to the loudness of the factory sub. The only way to know that would be to know the ohm rating of the factory sub, correct?

yes. but you are asking, should you buy a 2ohm vs 4ohm replacement for the factory sub. Since its a weak sub, and weak power to it, you want 2ohm to get more effiency and more power from it yes? it will be more noticeable if its 4ohm, if stock is 2ohm, well you are just replacing it.

A good sub is going to be better than the factory sub regardless. same ohm or less.

you only have like 100watts... I'd go nothing other than 2ohm had I a choice between 2/4

What if I don’t want it louder, but just want better quality base? I’m actually happy with the loudness or level of bass with the stock amp, just hoping for punchier, tighter base.

throw some polyfill in it and give it a whirl. may not feel the need to upgrade the bass. you aren't going to notice any sound quality difference between 100 watt 2ohm and 4ohm sub bass.

Too many "it depends" to give an appropriate answer. Comparing two drivers with different impedance ratings doesn't mean much without taking into account sensitivity/efficiency and the frequency at which it was measured, type and size enclosure it was designed for, the frequency response and deviation across its intended operating range, etc. Then factor in power handling and whether the OEM amp is 2 ohm stable. Comparing just the impedance won't tell you how the Punch will sound or if it will be louder.

To answer the OP's question the factory sub is 2 ohm.
