Removing roller followers?

Well, I'm pretty sure I have a bad roller follower on cylinder 5. I think its the one on the rearmost intake valve. It's really hard to tell by looking, so I thought I'd replace all the followers on cylinder 5 and maybe 6 to be sure. I read that it may be possible to remove the followers from these engines without removing the cams. It would appear that if you could compress the valve a bit with the piston down in the cylinder the follower might slide out.

Anyone done it? Is there a tool or something?

You need a proper valve spring compressor for this particular valvetrain. I have one for my 3-valve engine which works well and it's pretty easy to replace a follower using the tool. I believe I bought it at the Ford parts dept.

Get the tool and its possible. I replaced every valve spring w/o removing cams.

That's a cumbersome job. Leaning over the fender for hours takes it's toll even on a good lower back.

I was able to remove the intake cam caps and all 4 bolts from the front "mega cap" (or whatever its called) and rotate the cam out from the head enough to remove all the adjusters and followers on that cam. I ordered all new followers, but I'm starting with the DS intakes and going from there.
