I read that the rear window defroster runs for 10 min then shuts off. Is it thermostatically control so that it will cycle on and off, or do I have to turn the defroster off then back on for another 10 minutes of use?

Yes you need to turn it back on if you need it on for more than 10 minutes. This is true for most modern cars. What reason would you need it on longer than that though?

This is one feature of modern cars that really bugs me. I miss my pre-1990 cars that just had a physical switch that would stay on forever.

As to what reason, having the defroster on prevents rain from sheeting on the rear window. Very handy if you're driving for an hour or two through a heavy rain / snow storm.
