I plan on placing an order very soon for a 2016 base GT manual in magnetic metallic with spoiler delete as the only option. I've never ordered a new car before and was wondering on how coming to the final price works. Do I negotiate the price at the time of ordering or upon delivery? I believe that incentives and rebates should come into play only upon delivery and what is offered at that time?

I also heard a lot about people waiting much longer than 6-8 weeks to take delivery of their car? The dealer assured me that it should take no longer than 8 weeks, but I understand that they don't have total control over that.

Yea I joined the MCA over a month ago so I should be good there if I need to use xplan. I asked the dealer about xplan and said they can easily beat that price no problem.
Just watch the dealer fees if they are giving a deal under X-plan. X-plan has limits on the fees the dealer can charge. Outside of that, you will want to negotiate the car price before placing the order. If you have a trade in however it's then up to the dealer if they will give an offer on it now or wait until delivery.

Ok cool. Yea I ran numbers with a salesman about a month ago before I mentioned X-plan when I was searching for one in inventory and he laid out the fees very clearly. I may or may not have a trade in by the time I take delivery of the stang. I have a modified 2013 focus st that I am trying to sell privately beforehand. If I can't get it sold privately I will have to take the hit on trade in unfortunately. So I suppose I will just negotiate price without a trade in for now.

You should always negotiate sale price as if it were a cash deal with no trade. Sale price, trade in, and financing should be handled as three separate events, even if you choose to bundle them into the same transaction in the end.

Ideally you will want to arrange your own financing before visiting the dealership. Then visit the dealer for a test drive, and negotiate the sale price before the dealer orders or locates the vehicle. Finally, bring a check or bank draft for the agreed sale price to take delivery. If there is a trade, now is the time to bring that into the dealership for an appraisal.

We've all heard it's best to sell privately for the best price, but that can take time and has its own associated risks. I have found Carmax to be very fair with regard to pricing, and they make the deal quick and painless. This gives you another option to keep the trade out of the new car deal.

Yea I really don't want to have to wait for an ordered one to be built. I think I may go back in and see if they can locate one I like because they have none on the lot with what I want.

I've thought about Carmax and actually sold a car to them for a decent price. I have a feeling they would not like the upgraded turbo on my ST though... lol. And no, going back to stock is not an option at this point.
