My car does not have NAV and I only get 2GB a month of data on my iphone, so I would rather get a portable GPS I can use unlimited with no worries. Any suggestions on a quality portable GPS under $125? Looking for decent graphics (not 1995 looking user interface / graphics), and accurate maps in major areas. Displaying nearby POI"s like banks, food, etc would be a nice bonus.

I have used 3 different "Base Model" portable Garmin GPS Units for over the past 15 years. Never paid more then $75 for any of them on either Amazon or Ebay, all Brand New! If by chance you might travel to Canada and take it along, make sure the Model you purchase has Canada Maps (included). Not much difference in cost, under $10 at the most. Make sure whatever Model you purchase includes "Lifetime Map Updates". Tried all three, Tom Tom, Magellan, and Garmin and Garmin wins hands down!

How about free? Download WAZE on your Apple or Android phone. Shows real time traffic, cops, accidents. I have NAV in my s550 and I used this over it.

Some of us aging Dinosaurs who refuse to upgrade to "Smart Phones" still prefer to utilize a small portable plug-in GPS Device. Garmin offers a small "Bean-Bag" Base Unit that firmly secures the GPS to the Dash avoiding the distraction of sticking a suction cup unto the interior of the windshield. Anyone old enough to remember Phone Booths with Pay Phones (that actually had bi-fold doors) when a persons phone conversation was supposed to be a private matter? Blah, blah, blah. Now excuse me while I shoot and post a "selfie" of what I just ate for Lunch, ugg!

Google maps is amazing too.
Both will use my phones data, which is what I need to avoid since my monthly data allowance is only 2GB and most of that gets burned up with pandora

Google maps allows for offline cache of maps so you don'tneed data to navigate, just update the maps every now and then and good to go.

Here is a link on how to do it: https://support.google.com/gmm/answer/3273567?hl=en

Now you can use that $125 for some real car mods

Disappointed with TomTom GPS

There is a very bothersome feature on TomTom GPS'. The units insist on a default zoom level that is midway between closeup and statewide. If you zoom in for a close view...after a while the unit will automatically zoom back out. If you zoom out for a wide area view...after a while the unit will zoom back in for a middle level view. There is no way to stop this 'automatic' view. I complained to TomTom and was quickly rebuffed.
In addition...the lifetime map download is snail slow...the servers feed data as if it were being sent by an old acoustic system.
I have a Garmin replacement and it is a much better unit. The zoom level will hold to whatever you set it at...and it has lifetime maps that download very quickly.
