My open letter to Ford:

Let me preface by saying the name ā€œMustangā€ belongs to Ford legally, however the American icon belongs to Us (the Mustang enthusiast). We as enthusiast made the idea of Mustang, the icon it is today. This is exactly the problem I have with Ford using the name ā€œMustangā€ on a plain Jane boring suv, that happens to be electric. The word Mustang at least to Us and the enthusiast that came before us, invokes a sense of freedom. The very word harkens back to the days of the Wild West when wild mustangs roamed the untamed countryside.

We all bought Fordā€™s ā€œpony carā€ with the plans of making them our own by way of modifications. Some of Us have owned more than one Mustang, guilty as charged. Iā€™ve owned ā€˜70 GT, ā€˜89 5.0 coupe, ā€˜93 5.0 coupe and ā€˜15 GT myself, and proudly modified all of them. My Grandfather had two of them ā€˜65 GT and ā€˜69 Shelby GT500. My Grandma had one a ā€˜66 convertible red with white interior. My Momā€™s first car was a a Stang ā€˜64.5 purchased in May of that year, white with powder blue interior and a wood steering wheel. My Dad had a ā€˜68 GT s code, and later an ā€˜85 5.0 coupe. Weā€™ve made this happen for Ford, and they just took a huge dump on Us.

I probably wouldnā€™t be taking this so hard had they taken a current Mustang and just electrified it, but this is an abortion of a car design. Then they threw the sacred horse on, and gave the Mustang name to it, but sorry itā€™s not a Mustang. This thing is the love child of a fusion and escape aimed square at the soccer mom, whoā€™s gonna cruise it to the mall. You shouldā€™ve called this thing the EDGE-E that wouldā€™ve made more sense. Iā€™m not one of those old guys that canā€™t see electric being the future, I know thatā€™s been slowly happening. Iā€™m sure people will enjoy this car and modify it to their own liking, but itā€™ll never be a Mustang itā€™s not a two door coupe, fastback or convertible. Itā€™s a family hauler with some clever marketing/styling cues to pull the wool over sheeples eyes.

The Mustang is the only car that sold over half of a million cars in six months, and then hit a million in its first few years all because of Us (Mustang Enthusiasts) try not to forget that Ford. Mustang is the only car that was supposed to be changed to a front wheel drive platform (see Ford Probe), however Ford was forced by Us to keep with the design of rwd, and was rewarded for their efforts in sales.

Mustang is the only brand in America to have a museum run and owned by Us (Mustang Enthusiasts). The Mustang has been featured in over 400 films, over 10 million Mustangs have been produced and sold youā€™re welcome Ford. There are enthusiasts (Us) on 5 continents who have made the Mustang a world car. So go ahead Ford turn your back on Us, Iā€™ve never wanted to see you fail, but as youā€™ve stated with this atrocity times are changing. Iā€™ve been a Ford guy my whole life, Iā€™ve had numerous other models, but other brands are now starting to look appealing.

What you donā€™t understand is that you donā€™t own Mustang, Canā€™t wait to see you fall.

I thought we did the petition thread already ?

and....

Ford wants to make money.

There not gonna say " Lets change the name because a bunch of folks on the internet are offended"

Its all a bit silly don't ya think ?
Of course Ford wants to make money.

but this will hurt more than help.
There are few options for electric cars. Fewer still for electric trucks. Almost none for electric suv. So this is a blue ocean opportunity.

a well performing, good looking e suv is going to sell well.

but confusing it with a Mustang is only going to pump the brakes for those not necessarily wanting a sports car type suv and for this who are offended.

bottom line is that ford stands a better chance of making money by simply branding this as its own thing.

Disagree

The Mustang name is a positive name and brings up happy thoughts for all types of people. Dadā€™s Moms Grandparents and kids . Calling a new e car ā€œMustang Mach Eā€ will help boost sales IMO
Calling it a Ford E SUV or whatever wonā€™t get as much attention and sales.

But we can disagree !

Time will ultimately tell, but I think your statement is only accurate to certain segments or dependent on the circles you travel in. In my (circles), reactions to the Mach-E have ranged from a simple "that's not a Mustang", to surprise by less car savvy people, to shock and disgust from Ford loyalists, and of course to my being made fun of by friends who are loyal to other brands (until I point out what could happen to them if it does actually sell).

Personally, I don't have any issues with electrifying a Mustang. But slapping the pony badges on a CUV from Mexico??? The Mustang has always been a sporty 2-door coupe or convertible built in the USA (Michigan). When I finally reached the stage in life where I could afford a "fun car" I'd saved for a very long time. Before I bought I spent a significant amount of time asking friends and associates, reading forums, and test driving many very compelling offerings from manufacturers around the globe. I chose the Mustang because of it's heritage, because it was made in the USA, not because it was the fastest or had the best tech, etc. (it's no slouch, but you get my point). I kept coming back to it because of many other factors of course, but that heritage sold me. Had I shown up and seen a coupe next to a CUV I would have simply moved on to option #2. I've owned what feels like a fleet of S/CUV's, some with excellent tech like the Audi dashboard as an example, and the latest I own from Mercedes-Benz is pretty damn quick... but I sure as hell didn't aspire to buy one, save for years dreaming of them, nor have posters of them on the wall as a teen-ager (can you imagine the Mach-E on some kids wall ??? rather than the typical scantily clad model sprawled out next to it what's it going to have? A car seat, bag of diapers and a Costco in the background? :) )...

Anyway, I get it from a business standpoint... they have product to move and think this is the best way. They are willing to forsake their brand enthusiasts to move more of that product as they are beholden to a board and shareholders. I don't like it, and feel personally disappointed by it, and at this point am watching to see if this becomes another lesson they'll teach in business school about "what not to do" or "how to make money".... again, time will tell :)
