As far as scratches go....if you take your fingernail & drag it across it & it grabs or pulls on your fingernail...it can't be buffed out.
This.

The fingernail tells all. I'd be amazed if you can buff that out, I think it will require paint also.

People suck.

I "hate" people saying: "It's just a car!" We got brand new Grand Vitara in 2007. Neighbour - lets say he was big - parked beside us and because we had the parking lot on the outside, we offered him our parking spot so he can get out without scratching our car. Long story short. One day he parked close to our car, opened his door and bang - we had a dent. I did see him when he did it and talked right away to him. "It's only a fxxxx car man." I called the police and they pulled him out of his apartment to the police station because he still acted like an a-hole. People like that shouldn't drive at all.:tsk:

You got somebody arrested because he dinged your car opening his car door? Jesus, man -- that's ridiculous. If you drive a car in public, dings and dents and scratches WILL happen. They're not a big deal. I've already got a couple of tiny ones on my doors (parking garages in Manhattan have super-duper narrow spaces; if I don't fold my mirrors then the mirrors will overlap the white lines on both sides around the car at my normal garage). It's just the way of things.

read it again... he probably got taken to the police dept because of the way he acted towards the cops...not for the door ding.

This. The poster didn't "get him arrested". He got himself arrested. $100 he didn't take responsibility, then mouthed off one too many times to the police.

Fair enough, and some people do like to mouth off to cops and I think they basically get what they deserve when they get arrested for it, but still, calling the cops on somebody because they dinged your door and said "it's only a fxxxing car, man" is really beyond the pale. Like, unless the guy was threatening physical violence or something, why escalate things by calling the cops?

I usually make the assumption with stories like these, the call to the police wasn't based on this act alone. I would guess that he has historically been an @ss to his neighbors and this was the "straw->camel's back."

THIS:thumbsup: - And: Couple of tickets not paid and some other stuff he did in the past.

My wife got last year the rear bumper scratched on the way back home from work. Because she knows me and her car was only 2 weeks old, Dodge Journey, she calls right away the cops. She didn't tell the two young guys that and so everyone wrote down the insurance details. When the cops did show up - the two young guys run away. Both of them had a warrant on their head. My wife called me: "They run off! What I am doing now? The cops are after them. Should I wait? OMG!"

Yeah there are some crazy people out there in Alberta.

I have a Blackvue 2 camera dash cam. One in the front and one in the back. It has a parking mode, which records while the car is parked (Detects motion). In this situation, you could probably record the actual incident and see who was responsible for the damage to your car. And most likely you'll be able to see the plates of the persons responsible since they should be close to your car. In this situation you would show the recording to the police and they would contact the persons responsible and have them pay for the damages.
Dash cam for incidents that happen while driving isn't a bad idea. This would help out when you get into the "he said, she said" arguments after an accident. When I was young someone hit me at an intersection (their fault) and they were able to convince the police it was my fault. Footage would have helped out my case in that situation. As for parking lot bumps and bruises... not sure it would be overly helpful. You might get a glimpse of the culprit, but you won't always get their plates. And if they exit the view of the camera and shortly thereafter a car passes the camera, it would be hard to prove it was the same person. So unless you know them by sight, not much will come of it.

I parked in nearly the center (7 spaces to my right and 6 to my left) of the last row at a grocery store one day. Not because that's where I always park but because I was waiting on someone to come out of the store. I didn't feel the need to take up a "premium" spot since I wasn't even getting out of the car. Wouldn't you know, people parked in the spaces directly next to me on both sides...and they did that to me in my Explorer. My guess is they will do the same to my Mustang also. This was in no way a social experiment but it really proved to me that it's just "what people do" when they see a car parked off on its own.

OP, I agree with others in the group...those scratches do not look like shopping cart scratches...someone rubbed your bumper pulling into or out of the space next to you (IMHO).

I was going to say same thing sort of, without being such a #@$% about it. Personally I would just get over it. My car is black a year old and at this point I have 5-6 scratches and scuffs. People are sorry ass @#$%^#'s that don't care about anyone's things. By the time you go through all hassle to fix that scratch you will have another. I say just drive it.

Any chance you could post a picture or two of how you have them positioned? I'm in the market for a dash cam or two and would be very interested in seeing how your's are mounted.
Check out http://www.blackboxmycar.com/

Great site. The guy has a bunch of detailed videos.

No it is not "just the way of things". Door dings and scratches DO NOT have to have if people pay attention to what they're doing. And if somebody does damage your vehicle, do the right thing...leave note on the windshield with info and offer to fix it. This is an INTEGRITY issue...plain and simple. DO the right thing thing...that's all it boils down to. And it doesn't matter what kind of vehicle it is...it could be POS, but you don't know how hard that person had to work to achieve the financial ability to purchase that vehicle. I busted my ass for 24 years in the military to get to where I am today and have the ability to buy my Mustang...its a base model, but I put a HIGH degree of value on it, due to what it took for me to get it. So, if that happened to my Stang...fuck'n right I'm going to be pissed!! Now a rock in the windshield going down the highway...yeah, that's just shitty luck. I gotta say...that's a fucked up way to think man.
