Parking Lot Nonsense

I have had a Corolla XRS (basically a sporty Corolla with the high-revving 1.8 and 6-speed manual, lowered from the factory, strut brace, etc.) for the last 10 years now as my DD. I am planning to keep it as my DD and just have the Mustang as a casual car.
Anyway, I got it new in 2005, and it only took a week before some asshole scratched it. It's been the victim of countless door dings, construction shit falling on it, trailer hitches, rocks from dump trucks, etc.

Also, one HUGE fender dent and a bunch of roof pillar dents that I don't know wtf they're from. Since it's my daily, I just try to keep it clean even though it's covered in 10 years worth of city life dents and dings. I wonder if, since my Mustang will be much nicer looking, if people will be more respectful of it or maybe vandalize it more just to be dicks. I got the race red because I've always loved red Mustangs, but now I worry about it being keyed by jealous people, etc.
Thankfully it won't be subject to movie, grocery store, etc. parking lots and I will not be parking it too much in regular parking lots.

I figure in this day and age, they should have dent resistant panels by now. Didn't Saturn come up with that shit like 25 years ago?

yes they came out with dent resistant panels for a car the didn't look any worse when dented.

Whenever I park the GT, I'll choose an area far out and only take one spot of course. I don't mind taking a bit of a walk.

The other day I went to the grocery store and parked out in "no man's land" ... the GT was the only car out there. I was in the store for about 45 min and come out to see a small SUV parked in a space right next to my Mustang on the passenger side. I'm thinking ... WTF is going on? Why would someone even think about parking right next to the only car out there. I looked for door dings but didn't see any, thankfully.

I almost stayed there to wait for the owner to come back and ask them why they chose to park right next to the only car out there in the parking lot. Why do people do this? Are they just zombies who don't think, or is there some underlying reason why someone would do that? Maybe they wanted to look at the car, but dude ... please park a spot or two away and look. :doh:

I park far away also, I worry a little about getting a ding but in the past the door dings on my car have come from me opening my door too far. I had the wind blow my door open into a post at the gas station and it screwed the door up, so I just feel like everyone is safer if Im not parked next them......

I always wonder about these kinds of post, I mean aren't there a lot of other 35-45k cars in parking lots, you yourself might not even be aware of let alone non car enthusiasts. Plus the Mustang isn't really all that special in the US right ?

To many people its still just a car, especially in the US.

You should take comfort in the thing you mentioned yourself. If he parked near your car to have a look at it you also have to assume that he will treat it with respect.

Don't get me wrong I do understand the frustration. But that also goes for the person who just bought a new minivan.

well OP...maybe he and his SUV wanted to keep clear of door dings too, and he figured since you were out in no mans land, he would be safe parking next to you.... just a thought

my HORROR story is.....day 1 with our Explorer Sport. Parked out in no mans land. Only to find a shopping cart next to the car when we returned. Upon further review, there was a dent in the back lift gate that matched up with the corner of the shopping cart. Looks like someone just launched it across the lot at our Ex Sport. Only good thing was the shopping cart had plastic bumpers, so no scratch. I was able to push the dent out from the inside of the car. but man was i pissed.

A few thoughts:

4. The best spots are usually the ones next to the islands amongst all the other cars. Park as close to the curb as possible and there will be plenty of room between you and the spot next to you.

As an older guy what I have learned is no one cares about your stuff anymore, there is no respect for other people's things. In a world where folks are concerned that you have health care, or eat the right food or don't drink soda etc. etc. they just don't give a shit about other people's "things".

There is no answer. I would say parking in two spots just sets you up for some asshole. I try to park strategically but let's face it your going to get a ding or two eventually.

My wife's car is the ding King, never seen anything like it. Lol.

It has nothing to do with "just" being a Mustang. People have no respect for anyone anymore. The entitlement problem in the US causes everyone to be jealous of what others have and not to care about their own belongings. They dont care if their car looks like shit or the bump into other cars.

It's 100% an attitude problem with society that has changed since say 20 years ago. No one respects anyone else or their stuff anymore.

Even if there is another nice car I will park 1 spot away out of common decency not to make the other person crazy (and nice car doesn't mean they value it either from bumping your car with a door etc). Idk why people feel the need to purposely park next to you when you purposely park away from everyone else.

I may start carrying slips of paper with a nice message to those owners to put on their windshield (ok not so nice) and that I have taken a photo of their plate so if I find any damage expect a call from your insurance company for the damage.

Happens every time... When I am forced to park in a normal spot I try to find a spot with a minivan next to it, as the doors don't open but rather slide..

I've been lucky, knock on wood, that i haven't gotten any door dings... i literally park my car at the same spot at work every day and I think i end up just getting lucky

Here's an odd one, I usually park my car next to an island since it's more of an habit for me. I went to gym at 5 AM before work, oddly after I parked, I was checking Facebook in the car. Some guy in a late 90's Camry parked next to me, somewhat close to my car, but enough to get out comfortably. I looked cause I was curious, he gave me a dirty look I don't know why, my car was clean and looked new (no swirls) thought I just got it or something. Turns out that guy was a janitor at my gym, he looked middle eastern or indian kind of guy and I'm from a multi-cultured metropolitan city with muslims, christians and jews in eastern europe so I know he is either jealous or he is basically trying to want me to start fight me cause he want trouble. I just simply got out of the car and headed to gym like nothing happened. Other days after that, he still did it at the gym, but I gave him a dirty look back and kept looking till he walked away from gym haha. He didn't look ever since.

I also had one guy in an f250 parked next to me at chic fil a, my car was next to passenger side and I didn't park far. As I was right about to order, the passenger swung his door open, but I couldn't determine if he dinged it or not, f250 left a lot of space between his and mine as turned out, so probably opened to it's limit and didn't hit my car since I didn't find a ding. The passenger looked at me suspicious, cause I got out and checked for ding when he closed the door.

The difference is that this Mustang stands out a lot, you may not understand because from what I can see you don't drive one and don't live here in the US.

Comparing a brand new minivan to this car is laughable, go to a car lot and it's usually the sport cars that get the most attention.

I guess with your theory, I should leave my door unlocked with a $100 bill in plain sight and ASSUME there gonna respect my property.

I work a 4x10 shift and start at 5:30am. Maybe twice a week I'll stop at a local grocery store (Safeway) before work, which means I'm hitting it at about 5:20. Last Wednesday after exiting Safeway I approach my car and find that someone had spit on the driver side window. Went back inside and got two bottles of water to wash it off. I didn't see anyone in the parking lot before or after the incident. I can't imagine why anyone would go out of their way to approach a stranger's car just to spit on it. Unreal. But, I guess that's better than a dent or ding...
